Gun Owners Refuse to Register Under New York Law
New American ^ | Jan 25, 2013 | Alex Newman

After Democrats in New York rammed a sweeping assault on the right to keep and bear arms through the legislature that failed to exempt police officers from the draconian restrictions, gun owners and even some lawmakers are planning what has been dubbed potentially the largest act of civil disobedience in state history. According to news reports, gun rights activists are urging everyone to defy far-left Governor Andrew Cuomo’s new registration mandate while daring authorities to “come and take it.”

Analysts say the legislation, passed in a frenzy last week in the wake of the Newtown shooting, represents the most brazen infringement on the right to keep and bear arms anywhere in the nation. Among other points, the so-called SAFE Act seeks to limit magazines to just seven bullets, require virtually all of the estimated one million semi-automatic rifles in the state to be registered with authorities, mandate reporting of patients who express indications that they may have thoughts about hurting themselves or others by doctors, and more.

Aside from being unconstitutional, experts on gun violence also point out that the draconian schemes are a bad idea: Studies have repeatedly shown that more guns lead to less crime, and the phenomenon is obvious across America — just compare Chicago or D.C. to Alaska or Wyoming. The mandated reporting requirements for doctors, meanwhile, have come under fire from across the political spectrum. Whether it will even be possible to enforce the bill, however, remains to be seen.

Preparations are already being made for mass resistance. “I’ve heard from hundreds of people that they’re prepared to defy the law, and that number will be magnified by the thousands, by the tens of thousands, when the registration deadline comes,’’ said President Brian Olesen with American Shooters Supply,

I haven’t heard about that.

I wonder what constitutes *stores of weapons* and whether the gun or tow someone keeps somewhere in their home would be detectible.

I agree that it is unconstitutional. Searches are searches no matter what the technology used.

Small wonder that many NYers are looking to leave the state. It’s not feasible for us at the moment, but in a couple years, yeah. I want out of here for freer pastures.

I would take NOTHING for granted.

Stores of weapons was not defined in what I heard. And I heard this not once or twice, but repeatedly on the radio newsbreaks over the weekend, and these were national newsbreaks. The newsreaders sounded ecstatic each time they got to announce this coming technology to find out where guns are. It’s kind of like radar in that it will show the outlines of guns on a screen and give you the info necessary to track them right to their resting place.

I don’t see what would be the distinction between a larger weapons cache or a few guns someone had at home or in a building on their property somewhere. In every case, if the weapons belong to someone and they are on a piece of that person’s property, it would be unconstitutional to just randomly go around and point this thing anywhere and everywhere, then knock on doors and say we know you have guns here, and we’re coming in.

What is the NYC police chief’s name? Google it and guns, and I would bet you will find this story. Or just google his name alone...his name was all over these newsbreak announcements about this coming technology.

I would definitely refuse to register any of my “qualifying weapons”, unfortunately, they have all been lost in a tragic boating accident.

“Disobedience” does not imply wrong-doing. It simply means not obeying an order.”

IMO...The REAL act of disobedience, and wrong-doing in this would be to comply. Admin knows what they are up against...but are going to TRY anyway. To me...if there were EVER a time to form a united front against this tyranny it would be NOW.

Whatever remnants of the founding father’s principles that remain in We, the People, are the ones who must bring this admin to task. It is our duty and responsibility....no matter what the ‘flavor of the day’ is in the minds of those who so fervently seek to destroy this once great nation. This is a time of “Judgement” for America, for her sins HAVE reached the ‘high places’. Such a rebellious nation such as America, is also subject to the same fate as any other country who thought it couldn’t happen to them too.

These days, I often wonder if there are any people left who agree, and who are willing to band together in this.

And why is she waiting for gov’t permission to carry?

Again, we have had the beginnings of the fight under our noses but don’t take up the cause on those of the past.

Either they are Unalienable, or they require a permit/permission; they cannot be mixed.

There is no shall/may-issue as that would concede asking.

It is a great honor to be the first to give blood, and in the tradition of the Battle for Brooklyn, the tree of Liberty will be fed with the blood of New Yorkers.

With apologies to Martin Niemoeller:

When the Democrats came for the assault weapons,
I remained silent;
I did not own an assault weapon.

When they locked up the pistols,
I remained silent;
I did not own a pistol.

When they came for the rifles,
I did not speak out;
I did not own a rifle.

When they came for the shotguns,
I remained silent;
I didn’t own a shotgun.

When they came for me,
there was no way to stop them.

My thoughts mirror yours. They have passed and signed a bill that is.... Ill-tempered and there isn’t anyway that tthey can enforce it, which they have already admitted.

This bill is basically a tempetr tantrum directed at the electorate which cost many of them their positions and that may be the only result.

Andrew Cuomo must be returned to the private sector.

I’ve done more research...correction it is the police COMMISSIONER Ray Kelly who was quoted, rather than the police chief.

The stories listed on google appear to feature the idea that it is meant to detect when someone is illegally carrying a handgun, but what I thought I heard on the weekend newsbreaks didn’t sound quite like that.

At any rate, if you have technology that can reveal the outlines of guns on a person, why could you not use that to find guns anywhere?

Bottom line, I don’t trust any claims made on this.

One of the listed articles also did say that “civil libertarians were immediately outraged over this report”...I’m paraphrasing.

Whatever that means...

Would that include the civil liberty of exercising Second Amendment rights??

"My daughter says as soon as she turns 21 in a few weeks, she’s applying for a pistol permit."

Applying for a pistol permit, huh? What happens if it gets denied?

"My son is looking into the same."

Looking into it?

"If my oldest daughter gets the job she wants with law enforcement in forensics, I think she’s going for it too."

Please, sir, may I exercise my rights? Please? Pretty please?

How are you going to civilly disobey that one? At the end of the day, you still have to ask permission to exercise your rights.

Will it be when we are totally disarmed, and when a British guard JBT shall be stationed in every house?

Perhaps I should know this since I am an fairly regular reader of FR since 2005, but what does JBT stand for?

We could learn from liberals. There is strength in solidarity as long as everyone holds together. Conservatives on the other hand are like cats and it’s every man for himself. :-) I hope they hold together and refuse to comply

I hope gun owners can get over their urge to sanctimoniously critique and second-guess other gun owners who run afoul of illegal laws, such as the reaction we saw to the many incidents of open-carry harassment over the years.

Here's an example of what people who refuse to register and who get their doors kicked in are going to face from fellow gun owners:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2924531/posts?page=43#43

I and 9-12 of my friends are going to go march (walk) in military fatigue uniforms across a critical choke point for your city, carrying guns, and I expect you to ignore me, and just think nothing of, ‘cause no matter how it appears, “it’s legal”.

Idiots.

Chicago and DC are urban. They are cities. Alaska and Wyoming are sparsely populated states. Naturally you have less crime, because there are less people per square mile

Then compare DC to Dallas. Go ahead. I will wait.

Honestly, considering the political nature of the average NY-ker, I’ll believe resistance when I see it, you folks voted in these asshats running your state...Now all of a sudden they pull this on you!!!

And now you complain??? Threaten violence against these forces with indescriminant acts???

Ok...Fine, I’ll believe it when I see it...

It’s the law of that state now for some time...I haven’t seen squat...What’s the hold up NY???

Understand that I have extreme sarcasm, and full intent to light a fire under those in that state that should already be fighting this battle with a very active and public involvement to this tyrranical action by those you elect to office responsible for this nonsense...

I will reject and refuse to be baited into a response to “What should we do???”...You should already know what to do, and if you are incapable of clearly knowing and actually doing what needs to be done, then I wish the burden of servitude to be lite upon your shoulders...

It should have started the day the chief schmuck signed that hasty bill into law...And till now I haven’t seen squat...Shame on you NY...Your abstinance from the original agreement back in 1776 is showing again...

Prove us wrong, I welcome it, stand up and fight, or die in solitude...

I really hope to be proven wrong...

Regards...
