California is losing its children.
After decades of simultaneously worrying about and cashing in on its ever-growing population, the Golden State now awaits a new challenge: too few children and, eventually, too few skilled and able-bodied workers.
"Kids are no longer overrunning us. Now they're in short supply," said Dowell Myers, a demographer at the University of Southern California. "It changes the priorities for the state."
The number of California babies born each year began dropping steadily in 2007, according to state public health records, but the birthrate began slowing years before.
From 2002 to 2011, there was a statewide decrease in births of 5 percent.
Around Southern California, the trend can be seen across many counties. Los Angeles County saw a nearly 14 percent decrease in births in the same time period.
Within the county, similar declines were seen in San Gabriel Valley and in the South Bay.
Long Beach saw the number of live births decline quickly - by 7 percent - in just three years.
In the San Fernando Valley, from 2005 to 2010 the birthrate dropped from 13.5 births per 1,000 residents to 12.2 births per 1,000.

One place in California that ought to be totally devoid of kids is San Francisco. No parent who loves his children should ever want to so much as visit the city with his kids.
But liberals have been cheering about the declining (white) birth rate.
Which means we have to immigrate more here.
Probably because all the younger people, who are not on welfare, are leaving the state to raise their children in an AMERICAN evironment that has an AMERICAN future....
One trip to the City of Los Angeles belies these statistics. I would agree that the White population is declining as this is typical of dying civilizations.
Yeah they are cheering they can weed out those evil whites once and for all by importing more non-white. Of course muslims are the top pick.
it’s nature’s way
Attrition of white babies is being compensated for by welcoming pregnant illegal aliens from Mexico and birthing their babies at the expense of the white families who can’t afford to have children of their own. SICK!
To me, the answer is obvious.
Need to offer more welfare benefits.
Let the fedgov guarantee California’s bonds and let the gravy gush.
Breed for the state, the tax base is shrinking.
CA has a future????
When the achievers are taxed to the point they are forced to restrict their families; and the parasites are rewarded for irresponsible procreation - you wind up with a condition that even a child can understand.
Too many parasites, and the Host will die. California is riddled with parasites of every kind - and the achievers are punished for achieving. The achievers who are able, are fleeing - thus, California is doomed to bankruptcy.
Personally, I don’t care - but unfortunately the parasites who finally destroy California will then spread to my state and destroy that too.

I’m leaving. I don’t care what happens to California....
The disaster of California circa 2013 stands as irrefutable proof that bigger and more populous is not necessarily better.
2012 CA K-12 school enrollment is about 6.2 million students. These students are a snapshot of CA’s future and unfortunately, many don’t appear to be on the road to becoming taxpayers.
I’d say an increasing ILLEGAL birth rate, increasing taxes, increasing regulations, increasing gas prices, and increasing government would be the problem and why people are leaving.
But hey, believe what you want.
