I saw something today that upset and deeply disturbed me. I was walking past my son's bedroom, where he spends all his time on his computer playing those damn games of his. I stopped when I heard the sound of Wayne LaPierre's voice as he gave his speech about the Newtown massacre. I was surprised my son, who is just 14, was getting involved in anything political, but I was glad he was exposing himself to the right people. I opened the door, intending to tell him how proud I was, when the image on the screen stopped me cold. It was not, as I suspected, a video of Wayne LaPierre's speech, but was in fact a virtual recreation of the event, a video game. And in the game was a virtual Wayne LaPierre, standing at his podium, giving his speech... with a crosshair over his head. Before I could even utter a word to scold my child, he clicked his mouse. And the virtual Wayne LaPierre's face disappeared in a spray of blood.
I was horrified. I must have yelled at him for hours. I demanded to know where he got this game, and he showed me the thread on a website called "facepunch". You can see it for yourself here: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1239566&p=39218703
My son has since been banned from all video games and I had my computer-gifted daughter set up blocks on his machine so he can no longer access his game sites, at least for the time being.
The media in this country is out of control, and this is a perfect example. Movies and music and games have been getting more and more violent, and now we have game-people making threats against real leaders who speak out against this trend, and in defense of our right to bear arms. This needs to be held up as an example of what's wrong with our country, and what we need to change about our culture.
Now I'm a simple man. I love my God, my country, and my family. Heaven for me is a plate of mashed potatoes and a slice of corn-fed Iowa steak. I don't know much about computers and I don't usually involve myself in politics. This is my first time "posting" anything in fact; my daughter has been helping me write this. But seeing that horrible game brought something out in me. I don't know what, but something has to be done about this. This culture of violence corrupts our kids, and could very well cause the next Newtown. I'll be damned if I'm just gonna sit by and watch it happen.
A Google search for “facepunch” brings up a lot of disturbing things. I wish you the best with your son...thanks for taking care of him, and welcome aboard.
Hrm. I wonder how long it takes to get the zot. Concern troll.
“I don’t know what, but something has to be done about this. “This culture of violence” corrupts our kids, and could very well cause the next Newtown”
I bet you’re against the ‘culture of violence’ in America. Tell me, how many guns do you own?
I remember when they did this to Glenn Beck a few years ago...
Well, that video game your son found is tragic, and outrageous, to be sure. But I can't help but risk offending you by saying not involving yourself in politics is no virtue.
Politics, as they say, is certain to involve itself with you.
And I couldn't be more pleased with your very sane reaction to that outrageous "game," particularly that you understand that the game, its manufacturers and disseminators are also part of "the media."
My advice to you is buy as many lottery tickets as you can afford.
Once I get over the shock at a self proclaimed apolitical computer novice finding his way to the lions den of conservatism on the very first try out of the box, I’d have to say you were the luckiest man on earth.
And imagine my surprise you fit the stereotype of the hard-ass conservative parent to boot! I mean, what are the odds?
But the fact you claimed to yell at your kid for hours after shirking your parental responsibility in allowing him unfettered access to the net without providing him with any guidance at all?
Well...some people might think you were not being completely honest.
“I’m a simple man” was where I cracked up.
A conservative’s daughter being proficient at the internet and not needlepoint? Preposterous! I thought this was a high class joint too.
I see a longboat on the horizon. And kitties. Lotsa kitties. Singing the Immigrant song.
They come bearing cheese. And a moose, its teeth advancing on a sister...
Speaking of food, it looks like the mods are letting us play with ours.
With Beiber stuned at such a fable,
I sit here shirley as I’m able
Awaiting lightning from on high
For when it’s over, we’re sure to see
a sizzled corps...Oh Hugh Manatee!
*applause*
