The government should ban high-sugar cereals such as Coco Pops and other foods that are contributing to an obesity epidemic among British children, the shadow health secretary has urged.
Regulations limiting the amount of sugar, salt and fat in processed foods should be considered if the food industry does not take action itself, according to Labours Andy Burnham, who has begun a consultation on how to tackle obesity.
Burnham highlighted the case of breakfast cereals, saying many aimed at children are more than one-third sugar by weight.

And Mom would NEVER think about taking sugar from the cupboard and sprinkling it on Little Johnnie’s cereal after he complained it wasn’t sweet enough. Loons, all.
Ironic since cereals were created as a health food.
Soon, cameras in every kitchen (UK already has cameras in almost 100% of urban outdoors).
Next, electronic scales and probes: you’ll have to register each meal with The State before serving.
And S.F. and N.Y. are slapping their foreheads saying “why didn’t WE think of this?”
I thought I read sometime back that cereal companies were going to start making cereals with less sugar voluntarily. I wouldn’t mind if this were to be the case.
Ahhhh, nothing like the gubmit being the parent instead of the parent being the parent.
What a wonderful new world we live in.
All this crap was available to us as youngsters but NOOOO, we had to have Cheerios and Corn Flakes!
I think the British government should mandate bacon or sausage for every breakfast.... Muzzies included...
Don’t like it .... Self deport...
Kids are always one step ahead of the parents.
Seems to me the Soviet Union got this perfect. Their subjects were limited to a fixed amount of sugar per month. This is total freedom! They could sprinkle all their sugar on their morning cereals, or, choose to make cakes, or choose to... etc.
Make no doubt, this is where the left is going.... and soon!
Unfortunately, most cereals are using HFCS and not sugar. Sugar is NOT the problem - HFCS is. I can state this with absolute certainty.
I dropped 122 lbs in 6 mos. following 5 simple rules: NO HFCS - none, not in anything I consume, NO hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, I drink 100 oz of water daily, No enriched or processed grains, and eating 50% of my daily calories as protein - real fats are good for you.
When I’m in a cereal mood, sometimes I’ll take just raw oats and raisins, sometimes walnuts or chopped dates, and just add milk and no sugar...the raisins or dates make it plenty sweet. Delicious.
However...If I eat a Jethro Bodeen size bowl of raw oats, I find out quickly why horses fart so much. So Bee-ware.
Most cereals still use sugar, not HFCS.
Two big league examples:
Frosted Flakes:
Milled corn, sugar, contains 2% or less of malt flavoring, salt, BHT for freshness.
Cap’n Crunch
Ingredients include corn flour, sugar, oat flour, brown sugar, coconut oil and salt. Additives include niacinamide, reduced iron, zinc oxide, thiamin mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin and folic acid. Also included are yellow 5 and 6 food coloring and BHT-a preservative.
You’re right about HFCS. When I was a kid, soda was sweetened with sugar, not HFCS. Kids drank the same amount of soda but they weren’t fat. Now, non-diet soda in the US is sweetened with HFCS and there’s an obesity epidemic among our yutes.
HFCS is poison.
But they’re Gr-r-r-reat!
Thurl Ravenscroft wouldn’t lie to me.
8 spoons of sugar on fruit loops, lucky charms,
Strawberry syrup in milk, and a glass of Tang,
I was Zooming all morning.
Yes.
I read all ingredients. If it has HFC, I don’t buy it. You can find many brands of bread without it.
It’s lab made sugar that’s worse than the ingredient it’s replacing , to save company profits.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! not my COCO POPS. From my cold empty bowl.
I ate high sugar cereals...and other unhealthy junk..by the truckload when I was a kid but was as skinny as a rail. But then I didn’t sit on my a$$ laying video games or watching 200 channels of TV.
Guess that makes him a “Cereal Killer.”
