What do you know, the mystery beam in this FR post is showing up on the CONUS reflectivity slide link.

(mystery radar beam)

http://wdssii.nssl.noaa.gov/web/wdss2/products/radar/rconusloop.shtml

it’s coming out of Illinois, about Lincoln, headed west.

Hope military radar is immune to this stuff, just thinking.

My best guess would be what they talked about...a new cell tower using 4g....

Certainly a blocking of some sort.

Don’t want them boys turning switches at the same time and pushing buttons for false images, if you know what I mean.

LOL! Never underestimate the power of the Internet to get to the bottom of things... Or not! ;)

...wasn’t a heckofalotta aftershocks for this major quake given how shallow and intense it was.

There is different geology at work there for sure, but in a good way for the folks living in the area.

I would be willing to bet not all of the burst is in just the infrared spectrum.

I agree and I agree with gipper that it could be the source for some of the booming noises being reported around the world. Also maybe throwing off the sats vis-à-vis GW.

Thinking this through, has led me to a few other conclusions that have been bugging me all day... lol

I'll try to share them later, when I've had enough time to think it through more thoroughly - has to do with my "Errant Core Theory." LOL... Pun intended! ;)

More silly ideas by me:

Kind of always thought there could be a connection between the low frequency rumble/buzz/booms, that some people can hear at times, with the quartz piezoelectric effect below ground.

The booms would signal something gave way below ground that upsets the mechanical to electric to mechanical to electrical etc, etc syndrome, that brings the cycle to an end, but not necessarily producing a surface quake.

Do know for a fact about low frequency rumbling from a known underground source.
Years ago, a few miles from my house, a drilling rig stuck their pipe at about 14,000 feet.
There are a lot of ways to handle that, I won’t get into that end of it, but the first thing they do is crank up the diesels and pull on the pipe to the point right before the derrick collapses.
You could both hear and feel the vibrations for miles with no idea which direction they were coming from, both inside and outside of the house.
Most people had no idea what was going on.
The sound was very low frequency and aggravating as heck especially when you were around something that would resonate at the low frequency.
Went on for several days while they tried to free up their drill pipe.

I think the drill pipe acted as a several mile long tuning fork being vibrated by the diesels and hydraulics pulling on it setting up harmonics and subharmonics in formations carrying the vibrations for miles and miles back to the surface.

Every time I hear about the low rumbling/buzzing thing and its’ description by people hearing it, really reminds me of that occurrence.
Thinking the mechanical/electrical piezoelectric effect of quartz could be behind some of the naturally caused rumbling/buzzing/booms.
One big chunk of quartz or millions of small pieces of quartz being pressed and grinding together, electrical energy being produced causing more mechanical energy, causing more electrical energy etc, etc………….Things could get to popping down there real easy :)

Cajun, yeah when Salton lake was active a few months ago I thought the same thing about there deep boreholes acting as a conduit to allow for the recording of a stonely wave...makes sense.

Errant....your errant core idea rocks...lol

FYI, Yellowstone Lake is being subjected to a bit of a swarm the last few days!

Makes perfect sense to me. It could be both electrics and mechanical causing the booming. Walk around high voltage or high amperage systems and you hear/feel the power. Arcing/lightening that occurs during volcanic eruptions proves to me your idea has merit. Friction generates electrical currents and the source of lightening in the atmosphere; why wouldn't the same would occur beneath the ground when it shifts? Not to mention the crust being much more dense than high moisture atmosphere and therefore able to generated even more current for a given unit of mass.

Errant....your errant core idea rocks...lol

I've had one epiphany after another and have this thing figured out! Yeah, right... lol

I've written down about a dozen notes to go through and research. More later for y'all to critique. :)

I am more convinced than ever that it's tidal forces and NOT convection driving the earth's tectonics.

Barry has to be giving away grant money for “green” tectonic research.

Don't know if it's all of it, but it sure is some of it.
Just look at what tidal forces do to the moons of Jupiter, lesser effect here, but there is an effect.
What does that effect have way down below where things are more fluid and what effect does that have above where things are more solid, but not always *rock* solid?

So I am looking over quakes from last night and noticed the Weekly totals jumped worldwide. Looked on the map, saw nothing out of the ordinary. The went to US map those totals jumped to.....

The culprit? USGS finally posted all the aftershocks from the Alaska quake....lol

Sheesh how is one peon to survive his thirst for quake knowledge with info lagging so far behind?....lol
