Organization often played legal hardball against accusers in molestation cases, say attorneys and families.
When a lawsuit alleged that two young brothers in Michigan had been molested hundreds of times by a troop leader, the Boy Scouts denied responsibility and pointed the finger at someone else the boys' recently widowed mother.
The Scouts faulted the woman for her failure to provide adequate parental supervision, suggesting in court papers that she was responsible for any harm to her sons.
One of the boys' lawyers called that argument excessive.
The day their dad died, the perpetrator began to befriend the boys, Kelly Clark said. Then the Boy Scouts turn around and file papers saying Mom was the problem?
DATABASE: Tracking decades of allegations
The Scouts' legal tactics in the ongoing lawsuit are part of an aggressive approach that the youth group has long used in defending itself in child sex abuse cases, some victims, their families and lawyers say.
Since 1,247 confidential files were unsealed in October detailing allegations of sexual abuse in its ranks, Scouting has taken a more conciliatory stance.
We have heard from victims of abuse and are doing our very best to respond to each person with our utmost care and sensitivity, Scouting spokesman Deron Smith said in October, offering an apology, counseling and other assistance.
DOCUMENTS: A paper trail of abuse
But in the years before the files' release, some who alleged abuse say, their accusations were met with denial, blame and legal hardball.
The knives are out and you'd better get your knife out because if you don't, they will tear you to shreds, said Timothy Hale, who represents a Santa Barbara County teenager who was abused in 2007 at the age of 13 by volunteer Scout leader Al Steven Stein.

What do they think gay scout leaders are going to be doing when they have the opportunity. It's open season on children.
The liberals have succeeded in destroying the BSA and our Military.
The perp in this case is alleged to also have molested girls—basically any child who was unlucky enough to cross his path.
And who makes a 400 pound man a Scout leader? How can he perform his duties? Sounds like a failure at the local level.
^^^ Sounds like a failure at the local level. ^^^
Sounds more like a dream come true for a pedophile. We can all thank the liberal agenda for this
Not insane at all-—brilliant.
First they try to destroy the scouts by filling them with Homo’s.
When the scouts objected they switched tactics. Now they try to prove that the scouts are already infested with Homo’s.
You have to realize that since queers cannot gain a foothold in the Scouts, the object is to destroy the Boy Scouts, This is just a battle being fought on the flank.
My seven year old became a Tiger scout this year. The first den meeting was spent discussing to the parents the training the scout leaders get and the policies such as a scout never being alone with one leader at a time.
I’m a paranoid old fogey, but I would not let my child go to any kind of group meeting on a regular basis unless I was there.
For those who are younger, the Boy Scouts originally began as a kind of Roosevelt youth as a response to the Hitler youth movement in Germany. For decades, fathers were always involved in scouting activities, but now there are far too many young kids who don’t have dads that have become targets for pedophiles in all group setting.
It would seem that with the shrinking numbers of participants and parents willing to participate, that the Scouts group has lost its reason to be. Then, of course, there is the Girl Scouts that has been taken over by liberals.
Oops. sorry, got my history wrong. BSA started much earlier than the Roosevelt years, but it did take off then. Youth groups in general were quite popular then.
Guess I’m a confused old fogey, too. ;-)
BS!
Ok, I read your mea culpa.
That’s OK. I knew I would get smacked for that one. :-)
In my son’s troop, all of the leaders have their kids in the troop. Also I always made sure any coaches my kids played for, had one of their kids on the team as well.
Oh I dunno. My son joined BSA Tiger Cubs (6-7 y.o.) this year. Aside from the two-adult rule cited earlier the Tiger Cub handbook covers many things no longer taught in schools or exemplified in popular culture. Things such as honoring and participating in family activies, responsibilities and accoutability, the values of hard work, honesty, faith in God and patriotism. One of his recent homework assignements was devoted to honesty and making and keeping promises. Hardly the stuff of New Deal appropration politics or Free-S entitlement estate planning.
I went to the link and it was too hard to find the full article but......
You are correct. It is their “two deep leadership” policy.
No scout is to be alone with any adult leader at any time. If this guy was molesting kids during Scouting outings, the policy was clearly being ignored and Scouting is not at fault. If this guy was using his introduction to the kids through Scouting, then contacting them outside Scouting activities, the Mother should have been more aware. Scouting was not at fault.
I am an Eagle Scout and was an adult leader for many years. Protecting the young men in the program was taken VERY seriously.
A very good idea.
The Girl Scouts changed what they teach and what values they promote.
They infest any organization and destroy it from within. The military, BSA, church and traditional families.
They have no intentions of ever blending in with these entities. Their main goal is to destroy so that no one wants to go to church, join the military /BSA etc or become married.
The biggest obstacles to homos running wild is the family and religion. They intend to destroy both.
