My seven year old became a Tiger scout this year. The first den meeting was spent discussing to the parents the training the scout leaders get and the policies such as a scout never being alone with one leader at a time.
I’m a paranoid old fogey, but I would not let my child go to any kind of group meeting on a regular basis unless I was there.
For those who are younger, the Boy Scouts originally began as a kind of Roosevelt youth as a response to the Hitler youth movement in Germany. For decades, fathers were always involved in scouting activities, but now there are far too many young kids who don’t have dads that have become targets for pedophiles in all group setting.
It would seem that with the shrinking numbers of participants and parents willing to participate, that the Scouts group has lost its reason to be. Then, of course, there is the Girl Scouts that has been taken over by liberals.
Oops. sorry, got my history wrong. BSA started much earlier than the Roosevelt years, but it did take off then. Youth groups in general were quite popular then.
Guess I’m a confused old fogey, too. ;-)
I went to the link and it was too hard to find the full article but......
You are correct. It is their “two deep leadership” policy.
No scout is to be alone with any adult leader at any time. If this guy was molesting kids during Scouting outings, the policy was clearly being ignored and Scouting is not at fault. If this guy was using his introduction to the kids through Scouting, then contacting them outside Scouting activities, the Mother should have been more aware. Scouting was not at fault.
I am an Eagle Scout and was an adult leader for many years. Protecting the young men in the program was taken VERY seriously.
