Or even hit a mortar round mid-air before it's had a chance to explode. The machine fires a 30 kW primary laser and a 20 kW secondary laser that can slice through a steel girder at about 1,000 yards.

I imagine those containers are for the equipment. Pretty amazing that such advanced stuff is so portable. Of course to be of any use it would need to be. Let’s hope they stay in the right hands.

“Anti-aircraft laser unveiled at Farnborough Airshow” (video of shoot UAV shoot down) 2010
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10682693
“US firm Raytheon has unveiled its anti-aircraft laser at the Farnborough Airshow in Hampshire.
“The Laser Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) can either be used on its own or alongside a gunnery system.
“In May, the laser was used to shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a series of tests.
“Raytheon said the solid state fibre laser produces a 50 kilowatt beam and can be used against UAV, mortar, rockets and small surface ships.”
“’We’ve tied this into Phalanx, the US Navy’s anti-missile defence system that links a multiple barrelled 20mm Gatling gun to a radar guidance mechanism.’”

I want a laser pistol that can slice through a steel girder at 1,000 yards... Time for DARPA to offer a big prize to all our starving university inventor teams out there! Just as such teams got busy and came up with self-navigating dune buggies that could successfully traverse a vast stretch of desert without human intervention about 50 years before anyone predicted it’d be done, maybe someone could quickly come up with the aforementioned pistol (or rifle — either one would be cool with me), if the reward was sufficiently great. God knows we need it.

Northrop demonstrated shooting down artillery/mortar rounds several years ago.
Good to see people catching up.

"...can slice through a steel girder at about 1,000 yards." Holy smokes (no pun intended). Never thought I'd live to see ray guns developed, but here they are. Wow.

I saw a documentary on some of the stuff the Germans were doing back then, and it was amazing to consider they were doing it during that time period. They were working on many things that were well ahead of their time.
