NEWTOWN, Conn. (CNN) Dicks Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, says it has removed all guns from its store nearest to Newtown, Connecticut, and is suspending the sale of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its chains nationwide.
The move was made out of respect for the victims and families of last weeks Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting during this time of national mourning, the store said in a statement Tuesday morning.
We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy, the statement said.
It was unclear how long the store will keep the suspension in place for the guns, known as modern sporting rifles.

You didn't read the "less with arthritis" fine print?
I went to a Dick’s down in Fredericksburg, VA to look for a single box of pistol ammo. I had purchased the same ammo about three months prior at that very store. All their handguns were gone as well as the ammo.
I left and have never returned to any Dick’s Sporting Goods ever again.
It might sound rather gay to say this but I’m done with Dick’s.
Inhospitable should be in his.
That’s not the model .223 that was recovered by the police. The cop was carrying a rifle with a wooden stock and scope.
Exactly... /s
It is a shame that Dick’s bought Galyan’s. Galyan’s was a good store with relatively knowledgeable employees.
“Dicks has always been a joke in their firearms and hunting areas”
You could have stopped with ‘Dick’s has always been a joke.’ It’s Wal-mart with higher prices.
I think the rifles and shotguns in Dick’s Sporting Goods are way over priced. I have gotten much better deals over the internet and having them transferred to a local FFL. Screw the gun “box stores” for lack of a better term.
The Dick’s in our area has turned into a clothing store, with decorative canoes hanging from the ceiling for fake outdoor ambience
The stuff I occasionally bought there they no longer have, or it is super-expensive.
I think Dick’s is going the way of Borders and JC Penney.
I have on occasion shopped at the Dick’s in Erie, PA. That’s not happening again.
It would be better to give the manager on duty a polite earful.
You could be right. I didn’t even see any fine print!
Would that not be a good thing, at least it would seem so from the comments on this thread?
I found out about this chain a long time ago and have never shopped there. Never will, either.
A couple of weeks ago, they were out of some items I wanted, and they had to get them from another store. They told me when to come in to get them; I did and they weren't there. I ended up going in three more times without getting the merchandise, while they ran around looking for it, not knowing what had happened to it. The third time it turns out they had accidentally given my items to the UPS man. Finally, on the fourth visit, I got my stuff.
Good, Dick’s Sporting Goods sucks anyway. Why go there when you can go to Pro Bass?
Dick’s has never liked guns. There’s a huge new one near me. The guns are in the back of the store, invisible from the entrance and hidden behind a huge display of canoes. They have a small variety of long guns and the ammo is hidden behind a counter. They require a triple ID check to buy ammo and the prices are not good.
sad state of affairs. Called dicks and removed myself from their list. I will not buy anything from them in the future. Contacted Ruger and voiced my displeasure of Dicks with them and suggested they make a statement of displeasure with their actions.
this is a shame
