Media myths on ‘assault weapons’ and ‘semiautomatic firearms’
Washington Examiner ^ | December 17, 2012 | Timothy P. Carney

If gun-control advocates and our media want to have a conversation about government restrictions on gun ownership, I think that’s fine. Debating more issues, rather than fewer, is probably good for our politics.

But the conversation about guns needs to be a bit more factually precise. Today’s New York Times story on the AR-15 has a lot of good information and aims to be balanced, but the story still manages to perpetuate many of the most stubborn myths about rifles.

Some points I would like to make in response:

Like Rush said today - what is the definition of an assault rifle? Aren’t all guns ‘assault’ weapons???

When I was in the Army National Guard we called the M16, including the earlier fully automatic models “assault rifles” rather than “machine guns”. We called the M60 a “light machine gun” (although when I carried the M60 around I did not consider it all that “light”...it is just much ligher than medium or heavy machine guns, which are too large for a person to hold and fire, and are instead always mounted on a vehicle or stand). Calling an M16 a “machine gun” or even a “gun” would get one ridiculed by a Drill Sergent.

I did 2 tours in Iraq, and when I was there we allowed every Iraq to have an ak-47 and a clip of ammo. Now I remember going on patrol and having Iraqis tell me that when Saddam was in power it was not uncommon to go to school and see the teacher with an Ak slung around his arm or a student with an Ak plopped right down on his desk with his books.Point being first off all, an armed populace did not deter tryanny as witnessed by the abuses of Saddam and secondly, nobody was going up to the school and shooting it up.Crazy people by definition have to live on the fringe, but if everybody is armed then all of a sudden the guy with the gun doesn't feel too fringy

Recently an idiot liberal was fuming at the mouth at me insisting that AR stood for “Assault Rifle”. I just shook my head.

An “assault rifle” is a select-fire (either fully automatic or burst capable) rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine.

“Assault weapon” is an undefined term.

And liberals won’t be satisfied until their government goos are the only ones with guns.

Need to round up and prosecute all of the doctors who have seen and treated these “disturbed” persons without notifying the police. Fortunately, most of the insane persons wandering loose are harmless, but most would benefit from compassionate institutionalization.

I thought AR stood for "Assembly Required," because you always have to buy more neat stuff to attach to the rifle.

Slingshots are illegal in my state, along with crossbows.

CT already has an “assault weapons” ban.

>>Point being first off all, an armed populace did not deter tryanny as witnessed by the abuses of Saddam<<

It is not about to spoil a rule.

Being armed is a relative definition.

Everyone in every society is armed to some degree.

In order to make rule work to deter tyranny people has to be armed as heavily as government.

US legislation rules out using Army to counter domestic threats so widespread firearms ownership seems to be enough deterrent from possible government tyranny.

In post-Soviet States and Middle East where fully automatic AK is a kind of home appliance in class of power drill and oven governments rely on tanks and helicopter gunships for a population control.

It makes their armed citizen as vulnerable as unarmed American before some future uncontrolled feds.

With these kind of AFT leaders, you now know why our kids can’t read, write, speak, or think clearly.

Guns don’t kill, bad teachers union leaders do.
