COLUMBIA, S.C. --
A bill prefiled in the South Carolina Senate would allow adults who can legally buy guns to carry them without having concealed weapons permits.
"The Second Amendment says that our rights to have firearms cannot be infringed upon and that's what the federal government is doing right now," says Sen. Lee Bright, R-Spartanburg, the sponsor of the bill. He and Sen. Kevin Bryant co-sponsored the same bill last year, but it never made it out of committee.
To get a concealed weapons permit, you have to complete a training class of at least eight hours. It has to include:
-information on handgun laws and laws about the use of deadly force.-information about handgun safety and use.
-information about the proper storage of handguns, emphasizing reducing the possibility of injury to a child.
-actually firing the gun in the presence of an instructor.
The South Carolina Sheriffs' Association opposed the bill last year and will fight it again. Executive director Jeff Moore says, "We believe that that is the wrong thing to do simply because we believe a person ought to be trained on it to a minimal degree so that they have some understanding of how the weapon operates, how it works. And they need to know the rules for carrying them. Where can you carry them? Where can you not carry them?"
Sen. Bright says he's just trying to move back to the Constitution. The Second Amendment doesn't say anything about requiring a permit.

Um...correct me if I’m wrong, but having lived there, I’m pretty sure the ‘Toothless Hill Country Folk’ are already doin’ this! ;)
Thank goodness their Rep-ree-sent-a-tives are finally catchin’ UP, LOL!
The ONLY permit we need is the 2nd Amendment. And it doesn’t cost a dime.
Any time you have to ask permission from the governmnet, it is no longer a right.
As a SC resident I will say good on him and hope this gets through.
ummm, we had better think this through. carrying a handgun without a permit is the cause of many arrests in SC, which, in turn, takes thousands of murdering thugs off the streets.
I am totally cool with getting a permit. the bastard that wants to mug me is not. it won’t keep a gun out of his hands, but it will get him thrown into jail.
If he has a record, it will still be illegal for him to carry a gun.
I am not "cool" with having to obtain state permission to exercise your rights. It is a good incremental way to advance to constitutional carry, but it is not constitutional carry.
Not everybody in "hill country" in SC is toothless, although I'm sure everyone in Wisconsin has perfect teeth, not that that has anything to do with this subject, but you brought it up.
Oh, relax.
Hillbillies are Hillbillies no matter WHERE we live. Proud of it! :)
It will never get out of committee. We’ve had a bill “stuck” for 3 years just trying to get us to be able to carry into a restaurant that serves liquor. The same guy quashes it, and he’ll get this one too. (I’m tired of “hope” ... as recently said, “Hope is not a strategy” so I’m not listening to any of this stuff anymore ... when they “pass” it tell me).
What is wrong with an 8 hour training class on firearms?
Flame away.....
South Carolina is the only state in the South I can’t CC in (and won’t visit). Tell your governor to honor Indiana’s LTCH. At least allow non-resident Utah permits.
“What is wrong with an 8 hour training class on firearms?”
I had fired many thousands of rounds over a 30+ year period before I took my official, government approved class. It didn’t teach me anything I hadn’t already learned by reading my state laws on a website.
However, I did need to wait about 6 weeks to get in a class, and it took another month to receive my license. If I had been concerned about someone threatening me, I would have been dead before my license came. Your right to self-defense is not something the government should regulate.
BTW - my license arrived the same day Arizona no longer required it...
It is legal in S.C. to carry a loaded handgun in the glovebox or console of your car (”lockable container”), no permit required.
The no-CCW bill isn’t too farfetched, IMO.
Constitutional Carry ping!
‘The South is rising again.’
I have run into a few of those Wisconsin hillbillies.
Not any differant from the southern hillbillies I have known.
