Whenever the moment comes when I have to choose the box on the Census that asks me to describe my national identity, my hand hovers over which one to tick. With my fair hair, pale skin and green eyes, I certainly look like I should be picking the category that says White/British.
But by putting my mark in that square, I would not be doing justice to all that I am.
Like more than one million people in Britain, according to data from the 2011 Census released yesterday, I am a member of the fastest-growing population group in this country: those born to parents in inter-racial relationships.
As the granddaughter of an Indian entrepreneur who was at the forefront of this transformation, I can testify to just how far we have.
So bad was the prejudice I experienced that, when I was a young teenager, I actually dropped the Bengali surname I was born with. The name Mukerjee is now a huge source of pride to me, but back then I could not see beyond the teasing it provoked
As a child, I divided myself up like a pie-chart. I would tell anyone who would listen that I was one quarter Welsh from my fathers mother; a quarter Irish from my mothers father; and a quarter English from my mothers father.
But it was the final quarter the Indian bit from my fathers father that sounded most interesting of all.
In many ways, our family was just like any other white British family, in that we followed this countrys customs and celebrated Christmas with as much enthusiasm as any Christians we knew.

Remember that Europeans as a % of the world's population was 25% before the industrial revolution and then 30% in the 1800s and then improved medicine spread to the rest of the world.
The indian and chinese populations are already stabilising and the arab one is imploding due to 1st cousin marriages weakening their gene pool
So, one of my granddaughters looks Hispanic, one looks Filipino, one is a red head...one of my grandsons looks Filipino and the other like his father, blue eyes and blond hair.
Works for us...
yup, seen that, but again, I call bullcrap, like the “scientists” who say men will die out in 2200 or so
Doesn’t the current research support the idea that Caucasians descended from folks from India? If that’s true, how is a Brit and an Indian a mixed couple?
I could give a klingon crap about the DNA, the main question is are they still culturally “british”.....
Meaning, do they have poor oral hygine, cook bland boiled weird food, and speak “english” no one can understand because the H is silent....

I would say most “native americans” could be considered of oriental descent as well. Especially those from the pacific northwest.
I see your point.
Are care crashes going down?
Well done, you've spotted the most endearing traits...
Somehow, we all survived.
well, it’s not only current research. I think the article made an error in that
Minister warns of inbred Muslims
Incest has been the norm in Moslem societies, but they prevented it from harming the gene pool by "harvesting the steppes" -- grabbing women from hindus, christians, etc.
Case in point the Caliphs of the Ottomans -- by the time of Suleiman the Great, they were nearly pure Slavic blood
Or the Aga Khan -- his mother and grandmother were Europeans. He is 3/4 European and looks it.
These “extinction” arguments assume that demographic mixing is going on and will continue until minority traits disappear. I read an article talking about how red haired donor sperm was selling like hot cakes in Ireland; so modern medicine is likely going to bolster the presence of that train, not hinder it, at least in Ireland.
And that is assuming that genetic engineering for desired traits isn’t mainstreamed.
The "Aryan" invaders of India (closely related to the Iranians) brought an Indo-European language to India in 1500 B.C. or maybe earlier--something like 72% of the population of the subcontinent now speaks an Indo-European language (Hindi, Bengali, etc.) while most of the rest speak a Dravidian language (Tamil and others). The "Aryans" were presumably white, similar to the Persians, and tried to keep themselves separate from the lower castes by marrying only people of the same caste. I think many of them look European.
The Parsees (Zoroastrians) are relatively recent immigrants to India from Iran (escaping Muslim persecution), and they generally look "white" I think. This woman's grandfather might have been a Parsee, or perhaps from an upper-caste Hindu background.
