CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was in Portugal last week shooting a story for CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes, and he ended up being temporarily blinded for 36 hours.
He recounts the harrowing experience on his daytime talk show Anderson Live. In a nutshell, he was shooting out at sea, and sunlight reflecting off of the water burned his retina:
I wake up in the middle of the night and it feels like my eyes are on fire, my eyeballs and I think oh maybe I have sand in my eyes or something. I douse my eyes with water. Anyway, it turns out I have sunburned my eyeballs and I go blind. I went blind for 36 hours.
He took the picture above after visiting the doctor.
Video after the jump.
If his boyfriend burns where he pees, Anderson may very well burn were he sees, yes...
Ahhh, yes. I was gonna go there. Momma did say you could go blind...... Apparently it might be true.
Ouch. Glad he’s not blind.
I wonder if anyone is going to teach him some of the other basic rules of life.....
-Do not pee into the wind.
-Sticking a fork into an electrical outlet is never a good idea.
-Don’t drink out of the toilet.
-Do not stick body parts into other yours or anyone else’s butt.
-You should not share your wee wee with those that have their own.
What really caused his blindness. I read it in a Medical book years ago.
If you this #$#$&)) enough...it will make you blind.
cellulite can give you a heart attack ack ack...you oughta know by know....
Very nice catch.
Next time Anderson, only do it until you need glasses...
It's what happens to welders when they catch a flash while welding.
Anderson Cooper is the honorary president of the J.O. Club.
Did the same thing in my yute arc welding without a shield. I couldn't believe that I didn't have sand in my eyes.

People who are unfamiliar with the outdoors can get into really serious trouble. He’s lucky it wasn’t permanent....................
Temporarily blind but permanently stupid.
Dad told me it caused blindness
I guess this proves it can happen
So so smart - knows everything. Has he ever heard why welders wear their welding helmets? Protect their eyes from the bright charges.
Same thing can be had watching a welder, or a long day at the beach or in the snow.
I’ve had Welder’s eyes - very painful. I wasn’t blind but my eyes watered so much I couldn’t see clearly. Even though I knew better than watching a welder, if several are working you can get it anyway, out of the corner of your eye.
I don’t know why seamen rarely complain of it, but I’ll guess they learn not to stare at the sea & keep their eyes turned toward the boat.
Anyone know how sailors in the old days avoided this?
