College students learn of Obama's secret Pell Grant cuts
Examiner ^

Sorry, college students. President Obama has cut your access to Pell Grants by 33%; he just forgot to mention it before Election Day.

During the recent campaign, President Obama claimed credit for increasing funding to the Pell Grant program, which provides college funds, free from repayment, to millions of students. However, an email sent out Tuesday to some Dallas college students is revealing a detail the President forgot to mention: the time a student can receive a Pell Grant has been cut, by as much as three years. With Pell Grants for the fall semester now dispersed, colleges are informing students of their options, bringing the cuts to light.

Even if this HAD been reported 24/7 the college students wouldn’t have believed it. They’d say it was all made up by Fox News.

Looks like these college students didn’t do their homework on Obama’s broken promises.

For a minute I thought this was The Onion, until I read the source, and found that reality is about equally rediculous.

I’m in favor of cutting ALL federal aid to education. Too much money creates bubbles.

Cut Pell grants? Good! It’s a start on reducing the entitlement society. Want to go to college? Work and save for it. Why should anyone get a government handout (Pell grants are grants...they aren’t repaid). Anyone think people should get money to attend college? Give to scholarships or create your own.

Aunt Polgara: “That’s not the half of it. For new applicants, you now have to have a HS diploma or GED and maintain satisfactory progress toward a degree.”

Sounds like good news then. Pell grants and tuition assistance feed the government/university complex (similar to Ike’s military industrial complex, except it’s the education system that is colluding with government).

Miiitary training institutions aside, given that the states have never delegated to Congress the specific power to address public education issues, will somebody please tell me why the feds are taxing and spending for public education purposes in the first place? Justice Marshall had clarified in general that Congress is essentially prohibited from laying taxes for anything that Congress cannot justify under Section 8 of Article I of the Constitution.
"Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States." --Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

On the other hand, I have no problems with the states taxing and spending for state versions of Pell Grants. Such grants within a state are ultimately up to the legal majority voters / taxpayers of a given state.

Hah, it wasn’t just the college students, but the instructors were telling their classes to make sure to vote for obama because if they didn’t - they would lose financial aid. Hmmm, I wonder how their prophecy has worked out for them????

They aren’t cutting Pell Grants - just the time allowed to get a degree. Now that all schools on are semesters instead of some having quarters - this allows students 6 years to get a degree. Most bachelor’s degrees only take 4 years.

These “college students’ revealed their stupidity. They voted for the American Idol finalist.

They will be far better off not attending a state indoctrination institution. University studies are inadequate in today’s world.

The real bad news is that there are little vocational job opportunities.

The real bad news is that there are little vocational job opportunities.

For years the tax code has destroyed manufacturing in the US and driven a large portion of it overseas. Obama wants to destroy non-union manufacturing with regulation and more taxes. Add to this all these "colleges and universities" pumping out kids with some sort of "studies" degrees (whose only skill is partying and drinking), and soon there will be no entrepreneurs left in this country. Obama's fundamental change mission accomplished.
