Over there a soldier's thinking
Of a time not long ago,
When his loved ones got together;
'Twas Thanksgiving Day, you know.
Over there a soldier's dreaming
Of a turkey baked just right,
Mashed potatoes, golden gravy,
Chestnut dressing, pure delight!
Over there a soldier's hungry
For whipped cream on pumpkin pie.
Squares of cornbread, crusts so tender,
Homemade biscuits stacked up high.
Over there a soldier's wishing
He could have one buttered roll.
But he feasts on GI rations
While his unit's on patrol.
Over there a soldier's lying
In a ditch, his makeshift bed.
Mud and dirt are his companions;
Been awhile since he's been fed.
Over there a soldier's praying
That his open sores will heal.
He is sure that he'll feel better
Once he has a good hot meal.
Over there a soldier's hearing
Loud explosions, muffled cries.
Shrapnel killed his foxhole buddy
Right before his very eyes.
Over there a soldier's quoting
Scriptures learned at Mother's knee,
Proud that he's a mighty warrior,
Keeping all his loved ones free.
This Thanksgiving as you're eating
That sweet corn that grandpa grew,
Say a prayer for that dear soldier
Who would love to be with you.

When Thomas Gallaudet graduated from seminary in 1814, he had planned on becoming a preacher. However, his call to the ministry took a different turn when he met Alice, a 9-year-old, hearing-impaired girl in his neighborhood. Gallaudet began to communicate with her by writing words with a stick in the dirt.
Helping Alice motivated him to help others too. After consulting with European and American experts in educating the deaf, he refined a system widely known today as signing (a persons hands spell out the message). Eventually, he established the American School for the Deaf.
Gallaudets school for the hearing-impaired contained a Christian curriculum that shared the gospel and included Bible instruction. He had answered the call to preachbut it was to a very special group of people. Signing was the way he communicated the gospel.
Like Gallaudet, we too should be sharing the Word of God with people in ways they can understand. Otherwise, How shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? (Rom. 10:14). How might God want you to reach out to those around you?

Your Thanksgiving Personality is Thankful |
You're able to rise above any of the stress or drama associated with the holidays. You are just happy for what you have. Whether it's been the best or worst year of your life, you take this day to count your blessings... no matter how small they might be. And if possible, you try to help someone in need - anyone from a hungry stranger to a lonely friend. |
Your Thanksgiving Personality is Foodie |
Thanksgiving is all about the food for you, and you like it to be top notch. There's a good chance you do all the cooking... that is unless you dine out. Your ideal Thanksgiving would include your favorite dishes, as well as a few funky new experimental favorites. And it would also include friends and family who can appreciate good food as much as you do. No instant mashed potatoes lovers welcome! |

You'll make an appearance if you absolutely have to, but you won't enjoy it. You probably don't even like pumpkin pie. Your ideal Thanksgiving would be spent completely alone... or with the few people that you can tolerate. You'd eat whatever you want - even in front of the TV if you felt like it. And there's a good chance you wouldn't be eating sweet potatoes with marshmallow. Gag! |
Thanksgiving is one of your favorite days of the year, and not just because of the food.
While you enjoy Thanksgiving dishes as much as anyone else, you really live for being in one room with the people you love.
You look forward to Thanksgiving for many months, and you're tickled to see each new person walk through the door. You cherish every moment you spend, and you wish the day could go on forever. The people you spend Thanksgiving with make all the difference.

Where was the hanky alert?
God Bless our Troops!
You love Thanksgiving, as long as it’s done right. And that means no funky green jello salads.

Yes, I do like my Thanksgiving food. I like cooking it as much as eating it. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, maybe even more than Christmas (the Cowboys don’t play on Christmas).
There is a firm rule in the henkster household: no Christmas decorations are allowed until the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
I’m a “Thankful.” Thank the Creator for our wonderful, beautiful troops.

Well, the selections on this one were very limited.
Not many selections that I really wanted to choose.
I thought I'd be around the Canteen more yesterday
but work got in the way as usual.
I'll be in lurker mode today.
Got a few things to do since I'll be out of the office
on Friday, and I'm leaving today around 2.
Since I doubt I'll see y'all on Thursday, just wanted to wish you all a
But, please stay right where you are.
Keep the troops and their families entertained.
The Canteen is
OPEN 24 HOURS
Come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS
