(CBS News) WASHINGTON - CBS News has learned that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) cut specific references to "al Qaeda" and "terrorism" from the unclassified talking points given to Amassador Susan Rice on the Benghazi consulate attack - with the agreement of the CIA and FBI. The White House or State Department did not make those changes.

However, an intelligence source tells CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan the links to al Qaeda were deemed too "tenuous" to make public, because there was not strong confidence in the person providing the intelligence. CIA Director David Petraeus, however, told Congress he agreed to release the information -- the reference to al Qaeda -- in an early draft of the talking points, which were also distributed to select lawmakers.
"The intelligence community assessed from the very beginning that what happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack." DNI spokesman Shawn Turner tells CBS News. That information was shared at a classified level -- which Rice, as a member of President Obama's cabinet, would have been privy to.
An intelligence source says the talking points were passed from the CIA to the DNI, where the substantive edits were made, and then to FBI, which made more edits as part of "standard procedure".

These days, as I’ve said before, for Democrats to bring down a fellow Democrat, no amount of evidence is sufficient. For them to bring down a Republican, no amount of evidence is required.
Yes, and there was a story the other day that Clapper and Petraeus had disagreements a few days before Petraeus' resignation over the CIA taking the blame.
Makes sense that Clapper was responsible for removing the info.

First, Turner says, in the immediate aftermath of the attack, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, “there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo. We provided that initial assessment to Executive Branch officials and members of Congress, who used that information to discuss the attack publicly and provide updates as they became available. Throughout our investigation we continued to emphasize that information gathered was preliminary and evolving.”
But intelligence came in that caused officials to revise their “initial assessment to reflect new information indicating that it was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists,” Turner writes. “It remains unclear if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with, or sympathetic to al-Qa’ida. We continue to make progress, but there remain many unanswered questions. As more information becomes available our analysis will continue to evolve and we will obtain a more complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack.”
The DNI was created in 2004 because of concerns that the CIA hadn’t cooperated with other security agencies in the federal government prior to 9-11. The DNI is supposed to coordinate with the CIA, military, FBI, State and White House, but it means that the Director of the CIA no longer has a direct pipeline to the President. This is enabling the President to claim deniability because he can now blame the communication problems on the DNI, while letting the CIA claim that it did its job. But there is still no explanation as to why the DNI or CIA would let the White House and State spin the video explanation when there doesn’t appear to be any report from the CIA or DNI blaming the video.
We can’t keep calling this spin. It has gone far beyond that. Spin is when you take a smidgeon of truth and garnish it. There is no truth in this.

The table has been set, increased oppressive regulations instituted by damn near every cabinet bureaucracy equipped with SWAT teams provide the grounds to ensnare any targeted citizenry.

Two things...
First, four Americans are dead, including an ambassador and no one is being held responsible. There was time to intervene and nothing was done. Again, no one is being held responsible. For weeks leading up to the election the President and his principal secretaries lied to the public about what had happened and why. (We still don’t know why but we know it was not the film). The MSM doesn’t care and no elected Democrats care so no one will be held responsible for these lies either.
Second, nothing has been done about this atrocity. Hot air about bringing the killers to justice was spewed but it has been nothing but talk. So... How long will it be till these guys do it again? Will anyone be held responsible when they do it again?
