A Catholic nun has been charged with the systematic abuse of seven schoolgirls in the 1970s. Sister Mary Teresa Grogan has denied the 63 counts of indecent assault put to her.
It is alleged that these crimes took place while she was teaching in a primary school (middle school) in the midlands of Ireland from 1973 to 1977. All of her victims were the same age, in third class, approximately nine-years-old.
One complainant told the court that the nun would call her to her desk and put her hand inside her underwear.
The lawyer for the prosecution, Aileen Donnelly SC, said that during the trial the other complainants would be giving evidence to the court of highly similar but not identical assaults, the Irish Times reports.
Many of the victims attended the trial on Tuesday at the Sligo Circuit Court.
RTE reports that Grogan has spent time in the missions in Africa but returned a number of years ago when one of the alleged victims made a complaint to the police and an investigation into her behavior began.
Grogan (62) pleaded not guilty 63 times for each of the charges.
The trial before Judge Donagh McDonagh is expected to continue for two to three weeks.

Keep homosexuals away from all children. Politically incorrect, but wise.
Nuns could be extremely authoritarian. As Catholic school teachers in the Bronx, back in the 50’s, they would use long wooden rulers as ‘teaching aids’. Very effective, I am not joking.
One of those non-traditional nuns.
Yeah, that *would* explain why the Cunninghams rarely mentioned Chuck...
Do you remember the wooden clickers used when we had to genufleck before entering the pews?
Oh yes, I remember those rulers.
First of all, she’s not a nun. She’s a “sister” — nuns are cloistered. Second of all, she’s not wearing a habit which indicates she’s from a liberal order. Thus, this is not in the least bit surprising.
‘Do you remember the wooden clickers used when we had to genufleck before entering the pews?’
To this day I genuflect as I cross each aisle of pews and before I enter the pew. Also make the sign of the cross as I drive past any RC Church. They made me a good-little-soldier in my mid sixties.
I attended Catholic grade school , high school and college and after a lifetime of being a Catholic, I don’t attend church anymore........too many priest pedophiles and now this. Organized religion lends itself to abuse. Religion is a personal thing between you and your God.
The liberalization of the overall social order is what lends itself to abuse. The United States could not have been founded by men who maintained a strictly “personal” relationship with God.
I do the very same to this day,not out of fear but out of genuine reverence.I went to Catholic schools, including a Catholic boarding school when my mother was very sick, and the nuns were certainly strict (some more than others) but I was never "abused"...physically,psychologically or sexually.Yes,I suppose I feared some of them to a degree but *today* the only thing I fear is God's judgment. That's the main reason I try (with only partial success) to live a good, decent life.
Although it certainly shouldn't have happened at all we're only talking about 1 or 2 percent of priests and nuns. Sounds like you "scare" pretty easily.
But pretend like it's not so you can be indignantly outraged.
Well, that seems a bit excessive.
What is 63 squared anyway?
