An Israeli Defense Force Gaza brigade commander said officers fear that should hostilities resume, ?the opening of the next phase in the conflict will be much more violent.?
The materials used to build these arms are smuggled via a tunnel network under Rafah, Gaza's major southern city near Egypt. Israeli intelligence says that Hamas is working on a new version of the Kassam with a range of 15 to 20 km.
?Unfortunately, their digging of tunnels is much faster than our ability to stop it,? said the senior officer.
The IDF wants PA security forces to work harder to disarm the terrorist groups, but credits the PA for reducing the level of incitement against Israel and for clamping down on terror attacks.
Despite the effort, attacks continue. The IDF has registered 85 attacks against Israel in the Gaza Strip alone since the declaration of the ceasefire 20 days ago. Palestinian security forces report only 26 separate terror incidents took place since the terrorist factions announced the ceasefire.
The number of attacks is at an intifada low, however. The monthly average for the intifada was 24 Israelis killed and 150 wounded. So far, during the ceasefire which began in early July, there have been three Israelis (including a foreign worker) killed and five wounded. Seven Palestinians have been killed since the hudna took effect, most while attempting to conduct attacks.
