It began with traditional newspaper circulation about a decade ago, and now the phenomenon has spread to television: Like millions of Americans who shun the daily paper, many are voting with their remotes and are turning off network TV.

I mainly watch sports, but you can’t get away from the filth even there because the networks show raunchy previews for their sick shows during sports programming.

The most disgusting thing is the Viagra ads that ran seemingly non-stop during The World Series.

Sorry, but that’s nonsense... paying a few re-enactment no name actors to do a few bits, and interviewing a few historians and showing some B roll and still drawings/paintings while narrating something about history is about as damned cheap as you can get in terms of production cost.

Fact is, like it or not they found they could get the same ratings or more doing what they do now. Its their perogative, but so be it.

I also do tend to watch How Its Made or How do They Do it as well from time to time... but the channels that were once stable options in my choice are now to point where I couldn’t even tell you what channel number they are.

History Channel has been a joke for a long long time now...

Similar with SciFi, which became SyFy.

The owner groups are trying to de-nichify some of these niched channels by broadening their programming for more appeal.

When I got cable in 2003, I watched SciFi almost daily. Now, I seldom watch it - too many 'reality' ghost hunter type programs and wrestling and goshawful made for SyFy movies.

Classic Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Quantum Leap, Sliders...

Did anyone here ever see “Hometown Security”

It turned out one of the male police officers used to be a woman, the chief is a fat woman who urinates on herself (yes ON CAMERA, and there are a bunch of unwatchable old farts who run the place and talk about explicit sex and use language you know they think is going to make the show popular but in reality it is sick and perverted

I actually feel sorry for the cameramen who are following them around 24/7

one of the best lines ever in the history of television:

WKRP's Arthur Carlson [panicked]: 'I've got a monkey on my foot!'

I took a “History of Technology” class in college that was based around that show, and the book that went with it. Worthwhile.

I have the honor of having never having seen it. And if per chance I come across it, I thank you in advance for the warning and I will promptly skip it.

***I’d rather listen to classic rock or conservative radio.***

Just tuned my TV to the music selections for the first time;)

It then occurred to me that we can almost trace the decline of America’s manners and taste in the history of music.

From classic symphony thru Sinatra, Elvis, Beatles, BeeGees, Country & Gospel to Hip-Hop and finally Rap. I stopped buying recordings after Elvis.

I’ve introduced my kids to the show “Connections” (all of the episodes are actually on YouTube). Who needs regular TV?

"Connections" with James Burke is fabulous TV.

There's a book available as well. (Shortened Amazon link)

That’s what happens when you build an audience and build their confidence in you. I’m totally in AMC’s pocket right now, because they’ve put out enough shows that amaze me that when they announce a new show I give it a shot, even if it’s not necessarily a subject I normally find interesting their track record is good enough to give them a few hours. Because the broadcast networks are so scatter shot I don’t have that kind of confidence in any of them. No matter how many good shows Fox greenlights I don’t assume they’re next one will be any good, because for every Terminator they put on they also put on a Glee and an American Idol.

If the Democrats are willing to cheat to win elections, and that’s not even debatable anymore...just the magnitude is, then why would any advertiser think that the broadcast networks don’t cheat about their ratings? If the advertisers knew the real ratings numbers, they’d only pay a quarter of what they are paying to put commercials on a broadcast network.

I still have 1 year left on a contract with DirecTV, thanks to some equipment upgrades we got a year ago, but when it expires, I'm seriously considering dropping the whole thing, and just go with some form of Roku or AppleTV type of solution, with streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and/or Hulu to get only what I want at considerably lower prices.

You and me both. I have all these DirectTv channels that I never watch, except for the Walking Dead and the occasional National Geographic show. After the contract is up, I am getting the hell rid of it.

Christina Applegate in Married With Children. OMG! It still hurts so good.

You betcha! But she wasn't the only good thing about the show in the early years (I think it went downhill after "Steve" left). The exchanges between Peg and Al were classic! "Peg,you *know* I don't have any insurance so you must be killing me for the sport".Classic scripts...classic delivery.

"and they now mostly come with English closed captioning."

Thanks for the great idea! I never thought to check the CC to see if there was English subs on those shows. I get about 50% from my limited Spanish or they just talk too fast to keep up.
