For the last time, no one who resides on the beaches or any other LI town would describe themselves as living in Hempstead ... the town of, or otherwise ... No One! And they would consider it an insult if I insisted they did.
NO ONE, except maybe you, says, "I live in Valley Stream, in the town of Hempstead". Instead, they say, "I live in Valley Stream, in Nassau County".
When I send out Christmas cards they will be addressed to East Meadow, Atlantic Beach, Rockville Centre, Wantagh, and Inwood. I guess the cards sent to you will be addressed to 'the town of Hempstead'. So be it.
Geeze, I wish there was an 'ignore' button.
Diesels are more expensive and are louder but they last longer - just like diesel vehicles.
500 gal tank? You’re golden.
(have any vehicles that run on diesel? that’s a plus too in hindsight of what happened during Sandy at the gas stations)
People forget home heating oil is diesel.... If you heat with oil you have a fuel station at your house for emergencies of the generator and vehicle kind....
(just keep it full)
I get it. It’s too hard for you understood the different levels of local government. Would it have been easier for you to understand what I meant if I had listed every town in THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD that got a tidal surge
Oceanside/Baldwin/Freeport/Baldwin/Merrick/Bellmore/Wantaugh/Atlantic Beach/Lido Beach/Point Lookout/ Long Beach.
Instead I shorthanded it saying said THE TOWN of HEMPSTEAD because the person I was addressing knows Long Island.
Do you address your cards to Nassau County? Yet every town you named is in Nassau County. And in the Town of Hempstead
Yeah, they look about $1.5K and up, whereas I could get a cheapo gas one for $300 or so. Guess I’ve got some homework to do researching them (and some saving up).
Definitely looks like a worthwhile investment for SHTF scenarios.
Although the noise tends to attract thieves - my folks live by the Jersey shore & had to turn off & hide their generator at night.
Of course it isn’t. But we’re spending a ton of money and have nothing to show for it (again, not unusual for the feds)
FEMA was getting real bad but under DHS it is a sick joke. Christie and even a judge with half a brain should have ordered the Unions to stand down on closed shop contracts & man up with offered help or simply be replaced. All state and federal labor contracts should have been suspended for duration. By that I mean allowing outside help to come in from other states. That used to be called Mutual Aid one of the backbone agreements in emergency management.
If FEMA can't work through a winter storm it is as useless as Tits on a Boar Hog then. People even in the coldest of weather can be housed in warmth in Tent Cities as a temporary shelter.
Most important lesson is places like coastal NYC need to remove critical infrastructure such as utilities form below water level. Underground is not the same thing as under water. Huge difference. That includes transportation. Have generator back up on all critical systems such as public water treatment and pumping stations. Have key neighborhood shelters with same. Those type shelters should have fuel oil fired boilers for heat. The nursing home I worked in we could go a couple weeks independent off grid operation. Not everything would work but it would keep you alive, warm, and in lights.
Yes individuals should always be prepared as much as possible to live for days on what they have. You are the only person you can count on to respond in an emergency. The best thing to do when a hurricane is coming is leave a couple days in advance. 50 miles inland usually does the trick. Still though the government agencies charged with the specific duty and paid to handle emergencies and emergency management should be more so ready with lots of authority given to local agencies to act. Such things as enviromental laws etc should automatically be suspended for emergency duration. None of those agencies not a one should be unionized.
You were correct! The people of the Town of Hempstead were the hardest hit of all! So much harder than the people of the Rockaways, as this video clearly shows.
Mea culpa.
Dear dingbat
The article was talking about the people of Long Island. I was only asking for a little pity for them.
The people on Long Beach were hit HARD.
I wrote one sentence. I said nothing disparaging or made a comparison about the Rockaways. But for some reason you picked a fight out of the thin air to change the subject.
Queens voted OVERWHELMING for Obama , so following your tortured pretzel logic YOU have no pity for them.
Earlier in this thread you claimed that the Towns of Hempstead suffered the WORSE damage of all.
You have to tell '60 Minutes' right away ...
They had the gall, the audacity ... to think Rockaway was the hardest hit and filmed a segment about the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy there ... and it will be aired tonight!!!! You must stop them!!!!! You must correct them!!! They should have filmed in Long Beach!!!!
And, since you know it all, maybe you should throw them a civics lesson while you're at it ...
BTW, although the Rockaways are within New York City limits, thus have much lower property taxes, geographically it is part of Long Island ... which voted OVERWHELMING for Obama.
Unfortunately, most in the Republician enclave of Rockaway were unable to vote due to the aftermath from the storm. Both Mike Long, the Chairman of the Conservative Party of New York State and Bob Turner, the Republican who replaced Anthony Weiner, lost their homes in the fires.
Everything I said was factually true.
Not so much in your case.

Exactly true when red in the context of the article.
What was wrong/incorrect/poor reading comprehension on your part, is that I in any way shape or form reference the village of Hempstead as being hard hit. The village being in the middle of the island and not near water, as it were.
I’d draw you a map but you’ve already proved that you can’t read one.
You wrote:
"Have some pity for the people in the Town of Hempstead, who are the hardest hit. We are one of the last bastions of Republicans on Long Island. You would almost think it was a conspiracy."
Neither the village, nor the town, nor any hamlet within the township, suffered the hardest hit from Sandy, which is what you claimed.
It isn't true in red, purple, or any other color . . .
bawahahahahaha
Although I doubt you're interested, here is a wonderful story about the people of the East End who are helping:
South Fork Residents in Aid Effort in Rockaways
At work....shhhhh. Lol.
I know can you believe it?
We decided to take out the entire neighborhood w/ 4 of our trees.
We knocked off our block first @ 3:30 pm that day. I can’t believe how much flooding I saw...Lindenhurst under water?
I’m just now starting to get a good look at what happened and the damage done.
Do your family members still have their house standing?
Exactly. Only the union idiots here care. Glad to know they’re not being turned away anymore.
My family members house is ok, just flooding in the cellar, they just lost their boiler - so no power, heat or hot water -power is supposedly going to be turn on today or tomorrow.
Here is a link to pictures of Long Beach:
