Have some pity for the people in the Town of Hempstead, who are the hardest hit. We are one of the last bastions of Republicans on Long Island. You would almost think it was a conspiracy.

Exactly true when red in the context of the article.

What was wrong/incorrect/poor reading comprehension on your part, is that I in any way shape or form reference the village of Hempstead as being hard hit. The village being in the middle of the island and not near water, as it were.
