This site has been a frustrating disaster for the last week. What the he'll is going on? I can't get the page to load but 1 of 4 attempts. I'm about to give up, and I've been a member since 1998.
Please tell me this will be fixed before Tuesday!!
Member since 1998 here. I’m in Illinois and FR is so slow here even this evening that I doubt it will be of much use come Tuesday evening.
” - - - Maybe it just needs more cash. - - - “
Yup.
Harken back to the purge of 2011-2012, and remember that new equipment could not be purchased due to a decreased cash flow.
‘Cash on hand’ is just a way of keeping score, and FR was bouncing along in survival mode, while we flamed and blamed.
Now we need to look back and realize that:
‘Cash on hand’
Will make FR grand!
While we fuss and shout
We must not fear the ZOT.
It all works out
To pay while we discuss,
Mindful too that manners rule.
So when FR’s Circuits overload,
We each must open our billfold.
Complain if you must,
But this is clear:
America needs a financially healthy
FREE REPUBLIC for the
Next 8 years!
Soros could fund such a thing with what would amount to pocket change against EVERY major conservative website in the United States.
FR is one of the most open, interactive, dynamic sites I have ever seen. I have no idea how all these threads going back so many years can be kept active.
I certainly hope they find a solution. I don’t want this site looking like a run of the mill forum though.
It feels like they are running the back end of the site on four beefy servers and one of them has a bad network card, intermittent. (Or a bad cable) The DB servers feel OK, so it has to be one of the presentation servers.
FR has been slow and/or crashing for months now. I'm ready to give up... Grrr!
This is absolutely ridiculous.
Does anyone think this could be some kind of denial of service attack from the left? I’m being serious. Is there some kind of massive hit on the servers from mischievious parties that is causing this?
It has been very bad from Virginia.
Can’t imagine user growth is making this much of a difference. Am assuming software/data base changes have not occurred that would actually make a negative impact to system benchmarks.
If the above is correct, then logic tells me that a new data center is in order. Perhaps a central location like Chicago, with multiple Tier 1 providers/pipes.
A “GOP” alternative is not what most people are looking for...who heads up that site? David Frum?
Not that we aren’t all on the same team for the next couple of days :)
Looks like a good site. Thanks!
The 386 server needs to be upped to 1mb of ram.
Just do what we all do:
Reload lots, push each button 15 times rapidly.

Yeah, it’s torture to get in.
I’m in Texas and the forum is the pits - worse today than ever. Evidently, it won’t work on Tuesday, either. I’m giving up for Tuesday.
It’s the backbone for a great deal.
Many of the problems can be tracked here:
I’m in No. California and it is inconsistent here. I can usually access FR in the morning, but afternoon is iffy, and the last few days, it’s very hard to get any response at all at night, until maybe 11 or so Pacific time. (I’m surprised I can get on now!) My computer just tells me “website not available” or whatever its tech jargon is.
Is this some sort of denial of service attack, or a natural consequence of having so many people trying to get on the same site at the same time? I’m not angry, I’m just glad FR exists! But I *am* disappointed because I really doubt I’ll be able to get on at all on Tuesday afternoon or evening, and I expect to be a basket case. It would be really, really nice to have the company of my fellow FReepers then!!!!!
Should have included Jim Rob in your comments.
Either FR is going to have to go to a pay site (your suggestion), which is not a bad idea or it’s gonna have to start accepting ads. I think this latest stretch of problems has proved that $85K per quarter is not enough to fix this problem.
Personally I don’t think new servers will fix the problem. I think it’s deeper, in the software used to manage the traffic. Maybe it needs to be updated. Maybe it needs to be replaced. Maybe FR needs to go back to home base and start over from scratch. Maybe FR needs to hire some consultants for a few hours to provide some guidance. Lots of maybes. Really fast servers do no good if the software is overwhelmed by the traffic.
I know during the debates, FR choaks a lot. If I was not so financially strapped and looking for work (I do have an interview this week) I would have donated. Still, I hope FR remains up during election night.
