The county that includes Chicago on Friday approved a tax on firearms to help pay the healthcare costs from gun violence, the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose such a tax as a form of gun control.
Under the plan, Cook County, Ill., will impose a $25 tax on each firearm sold. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 in revenue in 2013.
With Friday's vote, the nation's second most populous county with nearly 5.2 million residents becomes the first major U.S. metropolitan area to impose a tax as a form of gun control, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
The Cook County board of commissioners voted 9 to 7 to approve the firearms tax.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who proposed the handgun tax, had earlier this week abandoned an additional proposed tax of 5 cents a bullet because the tax in some cases would have exceeded the price of ammunition.
Preckwinkle said that 670 victims of gun violence had been treated by the county's health system last year. The average cost per patient was $52,000.

Maybe they should put a tax on illegal gun carriers.
Do street thugs send in the tax voluntarily after they steal a gun, trade for drugs or buy one in an alley?
Revenue expectations unlikely to be met.
Just another reason to NOT live in an Urban city. They are decaying, death trap killing fields. Adding taxes for the luxury of being able to protect oneself is just the icing on the turd pie they want to feed lawful citizens.
I will be glad to see these places go.
I don’t think they will get that much money. I am within 10 minutes drive of two gun shops, Cabalas in Cook and Gat’s Guns in Kane. I predict that Gat’s Guns will be picking up more sales then Cabalas.
It’s the usual poorly thought out Rat horse sh*t, the only people it effects are the honest citizens.
Next, we will limit the size of Starbucks containers to 1 ounce as they also cause obesity. After Starbucks, we're coming after hummus. Finally, we will tax ANY computers manufactured outside the US....computers defined as anything device requiring electricity and using a computing chip.

Logic is not exactly a strong suit for the leftists.
Or how about an EBT card useage tax. Either a percentage or a per swipe fee (or both). It’s “unearned” income after all.
Peoples who hand over a gun in exchange to a $50 shopping vouncher are not going to be thrilled with that.
Exactly. Do the pandering leftist fools think that the shooters of these children were gonna pay a tax?
To pay the health care costs for gun violence.
Right.
Pretty ironic coming from the birthplace of obamacare, which will, after all, require all gun owners to carry health insurance.
Didn’t Emanuel read the damn bill?
When we had some folks at Republican Party meetings crowing about the fact that the Texas Legislature had placed a head tax on everyone who set foot in a strip club, I made my self unpopular by stating that the government should not place punitive taxes on legal businesses, just because the business is unpopular with a majority of the Legislature. I said “wait until the Democrats win an election, and put a $10 tax on setting foot in a gun shop or gun show.”

Infringement alright! Especially for those who cannot afford liberal good intentions. Like the poor.
