In a discussion of the "racial gap" in this year's election, Sullivan declared all southerners to be racists and are sliding back into the civil war. "If Virginia and Florida go back to the Republicans, it's the Confederacy, entirely. You put the map of the civil war over this electoral map you got the civil war," he said.
George Will correctly dismissed Sullivan's ranting as poppycock. Will noted that Democrats have been steadily losing the white vote since 1964 and that it has nothing to do with Barack Obama being black.
Will didn't mention it, but one of the interesting tidbits of information from the 2008 election is that Obama won the largest share of any Democrat running for president since 1976 -- not just any black Democrat, but any Democrat. If the country was so racist, how did that happen? He won 43 percent of the white vote in 2008.
But Sullivan persisted in his claim of racism repeatedly calling the southern states "the Confederates" and claiming that every southern state but Florida and Virginia voted as a block against Obama in 2008.

If “red” wins and keeps on winning, the Dems will eventually want it back.
The fact there are unapologetic southerners as the most reliable bloc of the GOP today simply kills some here.
Tuff Shite.
We ain't going nowhere.
The mods do on occasion blast some of them off on the bolt when time and again they prove themselves less than conservative
but it takes a lot
I agree completely. The color red has long represented Communism and its equally evil twin, Fascism. I grew up in the era of "...better dead than red..." but the lamestream media, buckling under to their Marxist masters, foisted this outlandish color scheme on us. Somewhere Noam Chomsky is fiendishly grinning at the mockery.
I still recall my dad and granddads Goldwater signs all over the yards and farm stuff as a 7 years old
West Jackson Mississippi
btw...i salute all on this thread
it’s heartening
Well said (as always, wardaddy) and Amen!
I think the political map would more reflect reality if the 2 colors were Blue and Gray, not Blue and Red.
Well, yeah...
Which I guess is why seeing Sullivan's name in a Free Republic thread title always elicits a confused shrug from me.
Andrew Sullivan? Really? Does anybody care what that simpleton says?
The racist, slavery-loving democrat bigots that used to live in the south moved north and now occupy much of New England and Washington DC.
Did you live, or even visit the South, during those times?
I bet you didn’t. You are a continent, even a world, away from the South. Please don’t comment on something you know nothing about.
“Then in 1972, Nixon grabbed almost everything including the south.”
Yes, by hook or crook he wasn’t going to let Chicago defeat him, again.
However, do not diminish his opposition. McGovern was as far left as Obama, but he was honest about it.
“In 76, Carter got it.”
He sure did, because any Republican would have lost because of Watergate, and the media.
Even Reagan.
That same media who should be reporting on Benghazigate right now.
“Nixon didnt take the South forever for the Republicans.”
I’m a Southerner, and I didn’t like Nixon. However, when paired against McGovern...RIP...Nixon was sunshine and rainbows.
“I was wrong. I believe we took it after Carter until Clinton in 92”
Only because...”Read my lips...no new taxes”. Another RINO squish.
Frankly, I’m surprised, and disappointed, in your comments. I don’t say that lightly because I’ve always liked and respected you.
You should study history. I have the advantage on you because I lived it.
Please forgive me. I meant to ping you to my above post.
Almost invariably, you are dealing with a compulsion or fear driven neurotic; someone who is convinced that social uniformity--monlithic social tyranny in the form of a World Order--is required for the future of Mankind. You are not dealing with an apostle of tolerance, understanding or altruism--however pretentious the individual.
To understand the sham philosophic underpinnings of the insult spouter, consider World Government & Surrender By Subterfuge. You will not find a perfect correlation between the pursuers of World Government & the insult spouters, but as you go up the ladder to the socially or academically prominent spouters, you will find that the correlation rapidly approaches a 100%. Those who have promoted the mindset of poseurs like Sullivan, are actually intent on destroying your and every other unique heritage on this earth.
No, most do not put it so bluntly. But there is no other "benefit" from where they are trying to take us. The need to suggest that the conservative is motivated by hatred or fear of others, is merely a tactic, derived from a projection of the spouter's own motivations.

Thanks WarDaddy. I was 13 when my dad explained Goldwater to my grandfather.
I think it’s very instructional to note where diversity is demanded to be instituted.
The Western Nations are the only places this is being demanded.
South Africa? Anyone suggesting it’s great to have diversity there?
How about Mexico, any Central or South American nations, are they being gamed on the need for diversity? How about China, or Russia, is anyone demanding they become diverse? How about most of Asia. Is anyone demanding Asia, Africa, or the Middle-East become diverse?
You are dead on target. When I hear the word diversity, I think Balkinization.
Americans came together in 1775-1781--actually became Americans in their own eyes--because you had strong communities up & down the original States, with recognized community leaders, who could set up Committees of Correspondence, and work with like minded folk in the other States. "Diversity," undermines the notion of cohesive communities. It has people walking on eggs, as it were, not to offend those who do not share the characteristic values of the "community."
"Diversity" is one of the most destructive gambits of the hard Left in their quest to dismantle the American way of life. It leads not to true diversity, but to a population abjectly unable to resist what is being imposed upon them.
Here is my current summary for what has been happening--that to which "diversity" is an increasingly significant contributor: Losing America's Multi-Generational Purpose.
William Flax
In a short reply, it’s not possible to flesh out exactly what I mean, but I do agree with your attention to the loss of our cohesion as fellow citizens with a common goal.
I will read your extended comments later, and respond. I’ve got to go somewhere in an hour or so, and don’t want to rush through your comments .
You want to know why I was a tad upset at your post?
“So what this guy risks by calling us racists, is losing the majority of voters who are White, and dont consider themselves to be racists.
Like the Old Confederacy? Well then I guess hes forgot one thing. The Dixie South at the time of the most Klu Klux Klan activity and the highest levels of racism, was heavily Democrat.
Do the names George Wallace, Orvil Faubus, and U. S. Senator Byrd(D) ring any bells?
Two had to be forced at the end of a National Guard bayonet to allow black children into southern public schools. The third was a Klu Klux Klan organizer and Klan leader.
Dont accuse me of looking like the old Confederacy, unless you want me to explain what the old Confederacy and Dixie Democrats looked like.”
That’s offensive to any of us who lived it, experienced it, and who know one heck of a lot more about it than you do.
All you’ve done so far is hiss and moan.
Where was I wrong?
Oh, that’s right, I wasn’t.
Except for the misunderstanding regarding Nixon taking the South and Carter’s win four years later, you haven’t taken the time to refute one thing I said.
BTW: You don’t have any clue whatsoever where I was in those days.
So....tell me where you were in “those days.”
