Gore's Current TV Up For Sale
NewsBusters ^ | October 26, 2012 | Noel Sheppard

Al Gore's Current TV is up for sale.

According to the New York Post, there has been enough interest in the television channel nobody watches let alone heard of that CEO Joel Hyatt has decided to shop around for offers.

“Current has been approached many times by media companies interested in acquiring our company,” Hyatt told the Post.

He's apparently had three inquiries.

"As a consequence," said Hyatt, "we thought it might be useful to engage expertise to help us evaluate our strategic options.”

A source told the Post the network is interviewing numerous investment banks but still hasn't launched a formal sales process.

Given the paltry ratings and undesirable placement with cable and dish networks, one has to wonder what this farce of a television channel is worth.

Stay tuned.

You right wing nuts better not low-ball bid my legacy ... cause you just might get it ... and then you would screw it up ... by dumping Overidiott and Client Number 9 ... among other things!

Will Gore accept my CARBONdioxcide credits, as an exchange for his TURKEY??

I’ll even throw in my TURKEY RECIPE!!

1 (18 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed

2 cups kosher salt

1/2 cup butter, melted

2 large onions, peeled and chopped

4 carrots, peeled and chopped

4 stalks celery, chopped

2 sprigs fresh thyme

1 bay leaf

1 cup dry white wine

Directions

Rub the turkey inside and out with the kosher salt. Place the bird in a large stock pot, and cover with cold water. Place in the refrigerator, and allow the turkey to soak in the salt and water mixture 12 hours, or overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Thoroughly rinse the turkey, and discard the brine mixture.
Brush the turkey with 1/2 the melted butter. Place breast side down on a roasting rack in a shallow roasting pan. Stuff the turkey cavity with 1 onion, 1/2 the carrots, 1/2 the celery, 1 sprig of thyme, and the bay leaf. Scatter the remaining vegetables and thyme around the bottom of the roasting pan, and cover with the white wine.
Roast uncovered 3 1/2 to 4 hours in the preheated oven, until the internal temperature of the thigh reaches 180 degrees F (85 degrees C). Carefully turn the turkey breast side up about 2/3 through the roasting time, and brush with the remaining butter. Allow the bird to stand about 30 minutes before carving.

This report is absolute rubbish...Current TV has been on the bidding block for at least two years, with absolutely no takers. In fact, Gore himself approached his buddies at Google about buying his failing network and not even those guys (who fly around in their private Boeing 767) were willing to pay a discounted price for Current.

If anyone actually buys the Gore network, it will be at a fire-sale price. Of course, The Wooden One still stands to make money on the deal, since Hyatt and the other major investors ponied up most of the money that has been keeping Current afloat. Gore contributed his “name” and that was about it.

The notion that media companies are lining up to buy Current is laughable. About the only outfit I can envision as a buyer is AOL, and only because they were willing to pay $300 million for the Huffington Post, roughly 10 times its actual value. If AOL has any money left, they could probably be convinced to waste it on Current.

I’m thinking “OWN/Current”, as I can imagine Al Gore marrying Oprah, and maybe the other women on The View as additional wives. Then they could move in as next door neighbors to the Kardashians, with a shared pool.

What are the assets Current would have for sale? Production rights to its in-house productions, worth zip. But do they have longterm slots in various cable and satellite systems? In other words, do they have contracts giving them the rights to Chanel X on DirecTV, Channel Y on Timewarner Cable, etc. for a certain number of years into the future, irrespective of content, and/or options?

On the liability side, do they have no-break contracts with people like Olberman, or producers of some of their, uh, content?

Might it not be possible, with negotiation on existing contracts, for a conservative group to buy this pig? FreepTV has an interesting sound, to select a totally random name.

Some of you will recall Harvey Gantt — an architect, and twice the Democratic nominee for US Senate in NC, losing both times to Jesse Helms. Mr. Gantt happens to be black, and a liberal, and he gained considerable national support from liberals in his two runs. Before his Senate runs, he made a lot of money, by acquiring FCC rights to a new TV station in Charlotte which had been set aside for minority ownership, and presumably minority-oriented programming. A group led by Mr. Gantt was awarded the FCC license, based largely on race, at a bargain price. And the group then sold the license, at a substantial profit, to a group of whites who proceeded to air “I Love Lucy” and “Andy Griffith” reruns.

So the lesson here is that the original intent of a TV station, or a network, may go out the window when ownership changes.

The three inquiries were along the lines of
“Is it UNDER a hundred dollars? IF SO, I’ll buy it!”
