The guy is dead. I don't see why the shark's thoughts are relevant. Does it make someone feel better that the shark may have been mistaken as opposed to mean?

‘Scuse me....what do these guys get paid annually?
I could use a job and I think surfers are seen by sharks to be prey ALL THE TIME.
Sharks like to eat surfers.
Can I get paid for this “expertise”? I have to subsidize Obama-phones!

They’ve been saying that since “Jaws” came out and the sharks continue to eat people. Can’t these “experts” have some shark classes or something for their sharks and teach them the difference between people and seals?

From the picture either that shark was huge or the guy was pretty good - that looks like a smallish board for a 38 year old to be using in a beach break.

A shark that bit and killed a surfer off of California's central coast probably was a great white and may have mistaken the boarder for prey, experts said Wednesday. A great example of the steel-trap-like minds that are behind California's world-beating success story of the past thirty-five years or so.

if the shark can attack, kill, and eat you, exactly how is the shark “mistaken” when it thinks you are prey?

That stick looks like a giant sea bass belly.
I have to wonder if a decal of a white shark on the bottom of a surfboard might help deter attacks, but I better shut up about it before a multi zillion dollar study is launched to determine just that.

"great white and may have mistaken the boarder for prey"Sharks don't make mistakes like that. Prey is prey to them whether it is a seal or a person. When a shark takes a bite out of someone and then lets go, the "experts" always say "The shark realized its mistake and let the person go." No, the lucky person just happened to get out of the water in time before the second killing attack came. The first bite from a Great White is normally a stunning attack to wait for the prey to bleed out before coming in for the final kill.

There's no other species that regularly occurs off of California that could inflict that kind of injury So, they've ruled out man-eating shrimp?
