VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, California A shark that bit and killed a surfer off of California's central coast probably was a great white and may have mistaken the boarder for prey, experts said Wednesday.
"Most shark attacks in California are caused by great whites. There's no other species that regularly occurs off of California that could inflict that kind of injury," said Andrew Nosal, a marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

Well, I guess we could put underwater signs creating Shark Crossings, so they will read them and stay away from human inhabited areas.

Taking off on a thread about a woman and deer crossing signs...
California = cold water
cold water = wear wet suit
wet suit = looks like seal
seal = dinner
LOL! I’m still trying decide if that woman was being sincere or if it was a put on. They should have asked her if she supports Obama and then I’d know for sure.
Actually, they don't. Which is why they usually spit them out. If that shark really wanted to eat him, it would have. It was just taking a "taste" of him, then spit him and the neoprene out.
Unfortunately for this man, he got "tasted" right in the chest.
Surfers look and move just like sea lions from below in certain light.
He was prey. No mistake.
So, they've ruled out man-eating shrimp?
Stupidest reporter I’ve read today. Maybe we can charge the shark with negligent homicide?
“Mistaken” for prey? The white shark is also called the man-eater shark, so if the fish in question was a white shark, he was making no mistake.
Of course she does! If she is dumb enough to make this kind of assertion, she's more than dumb enough to be an Obama supporter.

“I don’t see why the shark’s thoughts were relevant.”
They weren’t. And it also doesn’t matter if it was, or was not a mistake. A GW Shark is equipped to efficiently kill and dismember anything in the water. Humans are a fragile species ill-adapted to the water. A GW can ‘mouth’ you for a second or 2 to figure out what you are and you are going to probably bleed out as a result.
Another favorite GW hunting tactic is the “mobility kill” where the shark strikes hard and fast with the intent of stunning it’s prey and shearing off a fin or flipper. If that is a surfers leg... another dead surfer.
The fact that so many surfers are now surviving (due to amazing emergency medical assistance) is giving rise to speculation that “the Shark didn’t mean it.” We have no clue what “the Shark means”. It’s a really strange consequence of modern science arriving at totally unsupportable conclusions.
When I first heard this story, I thought the culprit might have been a blue shark, a species found off California, but these are much smaller than white sharks and wouldn’t have taken such a big bite.
Blue sharks are off CA’s coast, but the seldom come close to shore.
Surely that title calls for a Captain Obvious graphic...
I’m starting to think this might be why seals don’t surf. I might have to have an expert check it out.
I once saw one caught. We were fishing for sharks off Orange County, using mackerel for bait--and yes, this was several miles out at sea.
