SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — George S. McGovern, a proud liberal who argued fervently against the Vietnam War as a senator from South Dakota and suffered one of the most crushing defeats in presidential election history against Richard Nixon in 1972, died before dawn Sunday. He was 90.
A spokesman for McGovern's family, Steve Hildebrand, told The Associated Press by telephone that McGovern died at 5:15 a.m. Sunday at a hospice in Sioux Falls, surrounded by family and lifelong friends.

Obviously I disagreed with him politically in everything but I never doubted that he was a true patriot.

I agree. He was a nutball, but he seemed to be an honest nutball.
And right or wrong in his policies, I think he wanted what was best for America.
That makes him a patriot, IMHO.

He lived almost a century and saw the world change a great deal. He learned nothing from it though.
He lost in 1972 because he was out of touch with America - people thought the reason we were failing in Vietnam is because he and his party wanted peace at any price.
America’s irresoluteness signaled to its enemies the world could be made safe for Communism. McGovern was the wrong man for his time.
That’s all that needs to be said about his place in history.
I think he had a late-life conversion about the dangers of big government and high taxes and regulation. It came from his experience trying to run an inn.
McGovern was the first presidential candidate in whose campaign I got active (young and stupid back then)
But he was an honorable man unlike today’s democrats.

After that you went astray IMHO. But that does not undo the good you did
as a bomber pilot.
I always respected McGovern, even if I didn’t often agree with him. He was a true hero in WW2, and by all accounts was a good family man. That counts for a lot in my book.

RIP to a time when Democrats knew how to lose gracefully. Of course, knowing they had a solid lock on Congress back then probably helped them maintain civility.

I wasn’t around back then but I’ve never understood why Nixon thought he had to pull the illegal stuff, when he was roundly kicking McGovern’s ass anyway.
Richard Nixon was NOT one of the “good guys”. Both McGovern and Johnson were responsible for changing the Democrat party from a viable political alternative to the Communist Party West.
Rest in peace George. You meant well.
I remember him saying that if he had known how the laws he passed affected small businesses he would have never voted for them.
