The thousands of men expelled from the Irving-based Boy Scouts of America on suspicion of molesting children came from all walks of life — teachers and plumbers, doctors and bus drivers, politicians and police officers. They ranged in age from teenagers to senior citizens and came from troops in every state.
As the Scouts have long said, the files suggest no single profile of a predator. But a close look at nearly 1,900 confidential files opened between 1970 and 1991 revealed a pattern: Many suspected molesters engaged in what psychologists today call “grooming behavior,” a gradual seduction in which predators lavish children with attention, favors and gifts.
In hundreds of cases, Scout leaders allowed the boys to drive cars, drink alcohol or look at pornography. They gradually tested physical boundaries during skinny dipping, group showers, sleepovers and one-on-one activities.
“He combs the boys’ hair and buys them clothes and dinner,” one mother wrote to a Scouting official in 1985 about a Scoutmaster in Orange, Calif. “He takes them to church, motorcycle riding, skiing, flying. … Everybody thought he was a real nice guy. Now we know why he did these things.”
Dallas case
John McGrew was a Dallas Scoutmaster who had been recognized as teacher of the year and received a proclamation from City Hall for his work with disadvantaged youths. Two months before he was arrested on molestation charges, he was featured in Scouting Magazine, where his supervisor praised his “personal dedication and genuine love for these kids.”
In 1988, 16 boys testified in court that McGrew had abused them. He was convicted on several counts and sentenced to life in prison.

When I hear of a young gay committing suicide, I always wonder who the converter was and why he is still alive...to prey again. It’s NEVER mentioned in these suicides.
The Scouts, Boys and Girls Town, foster parents, Big Brothers/Sisters, these and other groups out there seek to help kids.
The sad thing in all this is, that tens of millions of young men/young women have been groomed to be nothing less or more than incredibly good citizens.
As with anything good though, it only takes one perverted mind to twist good into pure evil.
Some adults see these kids as projects, little people who have been shortchanged in life, and someone they would like to shower with common decency and wholesome moments.
The evil person that takes advantage of these kids, is a destroyer far beyond the kids they abuse.
Look at us here, questioning the very organization of Boy Scouts. It’s as if 99.5% of the kids in scouting were being abused, instead of the other way around.
The bad decision concerning perpetrators caught, is so damaging. The God I respect will have a special place for the abusers of children.

That is why the Catholic Church dismisses the claims of its enemies that allowing priests to marry would rectify the problem; Protestant and Jewish clergy conceded that it didn’t prevent them from having similar problems.
The simple fact is that animals gather where they can feed, and molesters gather where there are children. Unless they have children of their own in a specific group, I am suspicious of any adult looking to interact with children in a supervisory capacity (coach, clergy, teacher, scoutmaster).
The silence of the Girl Scouts on the gay issue is “deafening” (and disturbing); thankfully I have sons instead, and take them hiking/camping myself.
I was truly impressed when the Boy Scouts stuck to their guns on the gay scoutmaster issue (as the Catholic Church did); the absolute denial about the link between the two issues is bizarre. It is hard to tell organizations that have been sued for millions because of homosexuals in their ranks that they should continue having them there.

It seems you have to be suspicious of just about anyone who wants to spend all their free time around children. It simply isn’t normal behavior. Most people need to be around other adults to let the stress of kids pass for a while.

It sounds terrible when you consider these people are giving of their time, but I won’t take chances with my children. We’ve had coaches offer to drive them to practices/games, and politely refuse; I notice a small number of other parents wait at each practice (which can be a few hours), and assume they’re on the same page as me.
You’re right, there’s a less commonly spoken issue there as well.

Besides keeping the “morally straight” clause, and not permitting homo scoutmasters, the “two adult” rule is critical.
