Shortly after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney enjoyed cookies and soft drinks with the Rev. Billy Graham and his son Franklin Graham on Thursday at the elder Graham's mountaintop retreat, a reference to Mormonism as a cult was scrubbed from the website of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
In a section of the website called Billy Graham's My Answer there had been the question "What is a cult?"
Answer: "A cult is any group which teaches doctrines or beliefs that deviate from the biblical message of the Christian faith."
"Some of these groups are Jehovah's Witnesess, Mormons, the Unification Church, Unitarians, Spritualists, Scientologists, and others," the site continued.
No longer. On Tuesday, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association confirmed that page has recently been removed from the site.
Our primary focus at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association has always been promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ," Ken Barun, chief of staff for the association, told CNN in a statement. "We removed the information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign."

Actuall, Sciientology was a bet between John Campbell and L- Ron Hubbard, Hubbard betting that he could turn one of his stories into a religion and make the loons follow it.
If you're going to continue in this vein, let me know when it's time for your graham crackers and milk "rest" break.
Pathetic. Collaborating with the enemies of Christian faith, no matter how well intended, can lead to no good.
That’s what I commonly hear and I’ve heard no reason to disbelieve it. What Scientology would be a “heresy” against is another question. The idea of religion and valid scientific inquiry, as known by man, in general? It has more in common with the Hindu idea of purification through works during reincarnations (they call it getting “clear”) than with the savior-based philosophy of Christianity.
it’s a portmanteau of colorado and californian. next stupid remark, ‘raade?
And I assume you never consented to be an employee of a nonbeliever?
It’s called multi-tasking.
I have to agree with you here. I’ve always had great respect for the Reverend Billy and Franklin Graham, but I’m saddened by the apparent capitulation for, as you say, political expediency.
Either something is true or it isn’t. Duty to the Gospel first; let God worry about the consequences.
Post 13, you win - first reference of hate, even though there has been none.
All said, it would have been better to let the page stay, but to add an explanatory note or link to an explanation why Billy has befriended Mitt. And if Mitt got browned off about that, then so be it. There are certain things that can’t be denied.
If you were of a given religion; and if the religion of that candidate specifically condemned you and your religion -- as the Mormon church has done of Christian sects -- would you find that "inspirational" to say "amen" by voting for that representative Mormon candidate?
doesn't usually mean "love." Where did any BGEA representative ever make a claim to find a difficult choice "inspirational"? That's sticking words in their mouth. To put it bluntly it's lying about them.
Americans have watered down Christianity to a cruel joke...
Judaism became the same sort of cruel joke, over and over, before gospel times. Nothing’s new under the sun.
They shouldn’t have done that. This was an Evangelical website and fully entitled to make its judgments on other groups that are, essentially, after the same pool of people.
The website did not urge that Mormons be hunted down and killed, but simply advised that they do not have what could be referred to as a biblical faith, since essentially they do not believe in the Trinity and do not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. I know a lot of Mormons would like to skip over that inconvenient fact and somehow be considered Evangelicals, but they’re not. If they want their “presiding bishop” to have a vision where he decides they are to accept the Trinitarian, biblical faith, that’s fine, and they can then be considered regular Christians. But until that time, they’re not.
I think it’s unfortunate that politics got into this. I’m not happy about voting for a Mormon, but I will do so because there’s really no alternative. Besides, we already have a non-Christian in the White House, and at least Romney doesn’t have any allegiance to a religion that is entirely foreign and hostile to Christian values. Mormonism has problems of its own that its members will have to deal with, but even if Romney gets elected, these problems are not going to affect the rest of us.
Given how many approach faith now days at some point there will be pragmatic Christians declaring themselves Atheist if it serves their earthly goals...
American Christianity is what is truly written on an Etch-A-Sketch...
Amazing, yet there is always a core of the faithful pointing out the obvious whilst being drowned out by the popular..
(Colofornian ping) because I mentioned your reply)
Look who is wearing the shoe and who is not then decide like an adult.
Could also add Liberalism and Islam to that list as well.

That's not going to win any points in heaven. Yikes, I'm voting for Romney but lets not kid ourselves as to who he is and what he worships. It just that Obama is just so bad for America that a pile of horse manure would be a better president than Hussein.
