~ Hall of Heroes ~ Harold O. Messerschmidt Info from here. |
|
Harold O. Messerschmidt (1923 September 17, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decorationthe Medal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Messerschmidt joined the Army from Chester, Pennsylvania in May 1943, and by September 17, 1944 was serving as a Sergeant in Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. During a German attack on that day, near Radden, France, he led and encouraged his men until everyone in his unit had been killed or wounded. Ignoring his own wounds, he continued to fight the enemy force alone in hand to hand combat until he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor ten months later, on July 17, 1946. Messerschmidt, aged 20 or 21 at his death, was buried in Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery, Barnesville, Pennsylvania. |
Sergeant Messerschmidt's official Medal of Honor citation reads: He displayed conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. Braving machinegun, machine pistol, and rifle fire, he moved fearlessly and calmly from man to man along his 40-yard squad front, encouraging each to hold against the overwhelming assault of a fanatical foe surging up the hillside. Knocked to the ground by a burst from an enemy automatic weapon, he immediately jumped to his feet, and ignoring his grave wounds, fired his submachine gun at the enemy that was now upon them, killing 5 and wounding many others before his ammunition was spent. Virtually surrounded by a frenzied foe and all of his squad now casualties, he elected to fight alone, using his empty submachine gun as a bludgeon against his assailants. Spotting 1 of the enemy about to kill a wounded comrade, he felled the German with a blow of his weapon. Seeing friendly reinforcements running up the hill, he continued furiously to wield his empty gun against the foe in a new attack, and it was thus that he made the supreme sacrifice. Sgt. Messerschmidt's sustained heroism in hand-to-hand combat with superior enemy forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

At the computer, but with an ear cocked for any sound of my Dad moving around. He doesn’t always use his walker and I need to make sure they are in the same place. We just a minute ago caught him on the stair lift...he said he wanted batteries (they are downstairs and in the garage). So I found him batteries for his flashlight. No walker downstairs, and no one to help him.
I did have them fill out their Absentee Ballots this morning and I will mail them tomorrow. Now THAT was an interesting job...I had to show my Dad where the little circles were for the candidates he wanted and then have him keep at it until the circles were filled in enough. My Mom couldn’t see the circle even with a magnifying glass. I read her the candidates and then darkened the circles of her choice so she could fill them in. 2 more votes for the good guys.

An Escort Through The Valley
October 15, 2012
Ive heard people say, Im not afraid of death because Im confident that Im going to heaven; its the dying process that scares me! Yes, as Christians, we look forward to heaven but may be afraid of dying. We need not be ashamed to admit that. It is natural to be afraid of the pain that comes with dying, of being separated from our loved ones, of possibly impoverishing our families, and of regret over missed earthly opportunities.
Why dont Christians need to be afraid of death? Because Jesus was raised from the grave, and we who are in Christ will also be raised. That is why in 1 Corinthians 15:56-57, Paul proclaimed: The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The dying process itself is but an escort that ushers us into eternity with God. As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we can have this confidence from Gods Word: You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Ps. 23:4). The picture here is of the Lord coming alongside us, giving comfort and direction as He escorts us through the dark valley to the house of the Lord. There we will dwell with Him forever (v.6).
Think of just crossing a river,
Stepping out safe on that shore,
Sadness and suffering over,
Dwelling with Christ evermore! Anon.
Death is the last shadow before heavens dawn.
Read: Psalm 23

DC Metroland weather report
~ Today...Rain showers early
with scattered thunderstorms arriving for the afternoon.
High 68F. Winds SW at 10 to 15 mph.
Chance of rain 50%.
~ Tonight...Some clouds this evening
will give way to mainly clear skies overnight.
Low 48F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph.
Looks like we may get some much needed rain.
I want the rain but hope I can get in my morning walk
before it arrives.
We had a beautiful weekend...weather-wise.
But didn't get all the chores done that we wanted.
We rented two movies from RedBox this weekend.
They're new in our area, we originally had Blockbuster kiosks.
(must say I like the RedBox better)
Anyhoo...watched Act of Valor
(awesome movie...nail-biter movie if you love your troops)
and Battleship. Another movie worth seeing.
I need to see it again since my mother called at the beginning
to discuss Buffoon Biden.
Gotta make my rounds.
But please stay right where you are.
Chat up the military or a family member.
No need to fret...you know I'll be back!
The FR Canteen is
Come in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea,
pancakes, conversation, silliness,
and plain old BS
REMEMBER THEM ~ DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM
