In an abrupt announcement that caught state and local business officials off guard, cable giant Comcast announced Tuesday that it's closing all of its California call centers, including one in Natomas that employs about 300 workers.
Why? That's the tricky question.
Earlier in the day, citing the state's "high cost of doing business," a regional Comcast official said the company's Natomas, Livermore and Morgan Hill call centers will be shuttered on Nov. 30. Overall, about 1,000 jobs will be relocated to existing centers in Portland, Seattle and Denver.
But hours later, after state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, and the Governor's Office interceded, Comcast backtracked, saying its initial reasons were "incorrect."

Don’t they need CA state licenses to do business in the state?
There’s your answer.
Why?
Three words: socialist sh*t hole.
And if Obama wins a second term, that’ll be the new name of the (former) United States.
The Leftist Fascists still have the advantage of the power of a Leftist State Government with zero scruples to create misery for anybody doing business in California who doesn’t do things their way.
Thuggery isn’t limited to Chicago.
Re reading my return post I didn’t mention Comcast is only closing their “call centers”. They will still be doing business in California. Just won’t have the call centers here.
Only at war against entry level jobs? You are way wrong, my FRiend. California is at war with ALL businesses and ALL jobs and ALL consumers. I live here and I know.
Comcast just announced (locally) the opening of a 500 person call center in Colorado Springs CO.
They still have lots of customers in California and HUGE amounts of equipment here to deliver services. I’m sure the state could find many nasty ways to retaliate against their operations in CA.
Ah geez! Another californica company leaving! Gee, just raise taxes and put more regulations on companies and business’s! They will just take it in the a$$ for you jerry brown.
Interesting how many people and companies are announcing layoffs this week.
Turnaround??? Not one job was turned around to stay, simply the company was bullied into retracting the real reson from the press. And Jerry is pleased. Ha!
The country club Democrats in California smile to think that there will be less traffic on “their” roads and fewer people on “their” beaches.
Researching the topic i found new air quality rules had begun counting evaporating moisture and oils from hot stoves and ovens were now counted as POLLUTION ~ every pizza joint had to raise prices dramatically to pay for new equipment. btw, been there several times since ~ pizza here is vastly superior to California pizza, and that used to be the world center of pizza innovation.
Sometimes life IS fair isn't it! Now we got the winning entre!
Going to California...strike that, leaving from California.
That'll work right up until the point that their gardners, nannies and car-detailers all organize politically through some arm of La Raza and vote their overlords out of office. Then California will revert back to Mexico. Unintended consequences are a queen-b*tch!
I worked for a precursor of Comcast. I agree with the first part of your statement. However, in the US there is no such thing as an exclusive cable contract. You want to start a competitor—have at it.
Starting a cable company and getting cities or counties to allow it within their bounds is two different kettles of fish. In many, perhaps most jurisdictions there is an unending cable monopoly.
