Monday, September 17, 2012 | Kristinn

Political reporters on Twitter are saying they are standing by for a Romney media availability on the video released today by Mother Jones of Romney at a May fundraiser speaking frankly of his thoughts on Obama's base voters and their entitlement mentality, aka the 47% who pay no federal income taxes.

The media and GOP-E have jumped ugly on Romney tonight.

Steve Holland, Reuters: Romney at press avail to respond to video says his comments weren't "elegantly stated," and "could have said it in a more effective way."

Yay, this is the lead story at CNN.com today.

Romney is right, but he needs to be more careful even in private events and ASSUME what he is saying will get out.

Don’t think this is going to be as bad as I was afraid of last night, but still won’t help him and will again GET HIM OFF MESSAGE.

I just said ...maybe some? Obviously not you. I am not excited about the guy either, it`s a crying shame that this guy is the nominee! So certainly would not critic anybody that would not support him.

Just seems that the guy just actually stated a real truth...was thinking SOME might be pushed over the top, vote and hold nose just one more time?

Was just a thought that these comments might actually help Romney??

But it seems to me, even with talk radio, the internet etc, MSM still runs the show, the masses still get their lead from msm and it`s pollsters.

Everyone remember, Reagan was said to be a reckless, warmongering cowboy who hated the poor. He was elected twice.

” - - - You can’t villanize people simply because they don’t make enough money to pay taxes.”

Are you saying that 47 % of American taxpayers are below the Poverty Line?

I say that the politicians, including GWB, buy votes by promising voters free stuff. Right now 47 % of American voters get free stuff and will vote to keep it that way.

Romney FINALLY stepped up to the plate and hit the home run that we have been asking him to do.

The Vote-Buying Free Stuff politicians love it that they almost have 51 % of voters who pay no Personal Federal Income Tax, because they know that when that happens they will NEVER lose another National Election.

BTW, the “Villains” are the politicians who spend money that exceeds the Federal Income.

Freeloaders is exactly what they are.

Are you referring to the plethora of government employees at all levels along with unionized teachers who are overpaid and underworked all of whom pay their federal taxes but none of whom will vote for Romney???

Not all of us are the 53%. The per-child tax credit is a scam.

Right now I believe the credits/deductions are capped at tax+FICA(SS+med). (Get everything back including FICA while still getting credit for paying FICA.) There have been a couple of programs that allow furhter “refunds.” (I think EIC might. The “Making Work Pay” credit of a few years ago added something like $800 to the cap, so people basically got exerything they paid in + $800.

I suggest capping the credits so they don’t refund FICA and they don’t allow one to become a non-taxpayer - maybe have $20 that can’t be erased by credits.

Note - Credits are computed after the adjusted gross. If the standard or itemized deductions bring the tax to zero, than it’s zero.

This is all straight off my tax forms. I am in the 47% and it’s BS. I’m not going to cut a check to DC, but if you’re in the 53% an d happen to be in SW OK, freepmail me and I’ll buy you lunch.

I’m referring to the baby mamas, the illegals, the phony disability payment recipients and all of the other government scammers.

I would throw a whole lot of employees of the government entities that serve those scammers in the same category -- but Mitt's definition doesn't.

There are a whole lot of elderly living on SS and working poor who vote conservative -- but Mitt has just thrown these under the bus.

Representative Democracies only continue, until the masses realize that they can vote themselves largesse from the government coffers, and elect those who are willing to rob from the people to get elected.

With 47% of the electorate not paying taxes, we have reached this moment, when we must decide if America is to continue, or perish under the good intentions that are breaking our bank and turning us from a nation of laws, to a nation of takers.

good luck mitt. call them what they are. leaches on the backs of the working class.

I love the look on Judge Judy’s face when a defendant tells her she/he does not work but got $6000 from the IRS (EITC refunds).

Ramsey county, Moneysota Welfare, best in the world, and Judge Judy ask this be sent to Congress too.

Do we want to live in freedom or do we want America to become Venezuela, I guess in the next few days we will find out what the American people want. We will see what the polls show and I hope to God it shows that the American people want freedom

Or a country where everything is free, but us. (To paraphrase Ryan in his convention speech)

So are those low wage employees who don’t make enough to pay fed taxes, part of what he considered the freeloading 47%?"

Ask Mitt. I don't know his thoughts.

I thought you understood what he was saying.

Do I understand you correctly, that you would like to eliminate voting rights for those receiving government benefits? Is this correct?

I’m sorry you feel that way. In my opinion the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THIS GOV’T WASTES will continue when half the people are not paying for it...they ignore it.

Let me give you a simple example. If I give you two tickets to the ballgame this Saturday night for free and you don’t go, are you upset? Do you feel you wasted money? Not really. You might be upset you didn’t have a chance to go, but at the end of the day you didn’t pay for it so no big deal.

Now, same example, but this time you bought tickets for the ball game but you can’t go. Now, are you upset? Do you feel you wasted something? Of course, because you have some skin in the game and spent some money. YOU ACTUALLY FEEL IT.

That was my point. I’m sick of liberals saying that paying taxes is Patriotic. Well, if that’s the case, they should want EVERYONE to feel patriotic, even if it is a token amount. EVERYONE. EVERYONE should have some skin in the game.

The problem is that we have too few taxpayers and those of us that are paying, are paying too much.

I’m not a liberal troll in any sense of the words. I’m neither liberal or a troll, but I do believe too many Americans are getting a handout and need to understand the waste and fraud going on. If they pay income taxes they will get that message loud and clear and put pressure on their gov’t to stop wasting their money.

Of course it would be important to reduce the size of the gov’t. We can all agree on that. Yes, people pay taxes in other areas, but they are usually consumption taxes like sales tax, etc. The vast majority of revenue from taxation, however, comes from the income tax. If 50% of the people aren’t paying a red cent there, then they have no skin in the game. Meanwhile, the 50% of us that are paying income tax are paying through the nose because we are paying for 100% of the people.

Look, I get there are fixed incomes, etc...that’s part of the point. Taxation is a penalty in many ways, so a little penalty for everyone would get people pissed off. That’s what I want. I want EVERYONE pissed off at the gov’t waste that is going on, but when you don’t pay any income taxes, you don’t care about gov’t waste because you aren’t paying for it. If suddenly a fixed income person has to spend $250 on income taxes, you can bet your ass that they are damn pissed off when their money is wasted because now they have skin in the game.

“Do I understand you correctly, that you would like to eliminate voting rights for those receiving government benefits? Is this correct?”

If I was king of the world, voting would be limited to taxpayers. But then, if I was king of the world, everyone would pay taxes in a lump sum in April. There would be no withholding.

Government is not supposed to be about transferring wealth from one group of people to another group. If you don’t understand that, you are not a conservative in favor of limited government.

Here is what Mitt thinks:

"This is ultimately a question about direction for the country. Do you believe in a government-centered society that provides more and more benefits or do you believe instead in a free enterprise society where people are able to pursue their dreams?"

What is your response?

I think everybody should have a dog in the fight.
I hate taxes, but until we get to a fair tax or flat tax, it’s time for EVERYBODY to pay something. Once you do have skin in the game, you will all of a sudden become aware of how your tax money is being wasted.
