Rep. Todd Akin’s wife, Lulli Akin, says the Republican Party’s attempts to push her husband out of the Missouri Senate race — over his false assertion that women who are raped rarely get pregnant — are like rape itself. RELATED: Akin TV Ad Buy Canceled — For Failure To Pay Station
She also believes the GOP’s abandonment is on par with the tyranny that launched the American Revolution.
Akin’s wife isn’t the first one to compare Akin’s explosive rape comments, and the ensuing fallout, to rape: Bryan Fischer said the party’s treatment of the embattled candidate had made Akin “a victim of forcible assault.”
Lulli Akin made the charge in a new National Journal profile, which reveals a family affair of a campaign — Akin’s campaign manager is his son, and Lulli is also a key player.
Lulli Akin says in the profile that she is not turned off by the refusal of national Republicans to contribute money to the race. She says small donations — and God’s will — will help her husband win:
“God can increase,” she said, citing the “Feeding of the 5,000” — a Gospel miracle in which Jesus uses five small barley loaves and two small fish to feed a multitude. The campaign will take small contributions, “respect them, and say ‘God, multiply it. Make it pay,’ ” Lulli Akin said. “It brought us through the primary, same way. We’re gonna see it again, because God wants to be honored.”
Lulli Akin echoed her husband’s disdain for Republican leaders:
Lulli Akin said that efforts to push her husband out of the race threaten to replace elections “by the people and for the people” with “tyranny, a top-down approach.” She added, “Party bosses dictating who is allowed to advance through the party and make all the decisions—it’s just like 1776 in that way.”
She cited colonists who “rose up and said, ‘Not in my home, you don’t come and rape my daughters and my … wife. But that is where we are again. There has been a freedom of elections, not tyranny of selections since way back. Why are we going to roll over and let them steamroll us, be it Democrats or Republicans or whomever?”
Todd Akin said his wife’s comparisons to 1776 were “a little more grandiose than the way I would say it” — but he did say that there is a “this tremendous sense of uprising I feel among the people I talk to.”
Why are these people not calling for Connie Mack in Florida or Scott Brown from MA to withdraw?
This is all on Akin from here forward. After his inappropriate comments regarding rape he decided to stay in the race. He said that the issue would blow over and that true conservatives would come to his aid and would donate enough money to support his campaign. Huckabee came out and announced his continued support. Akin is in this race and if his position is so strong and righteous he should be able to raise the money necessary to compete. If not, its all on Akin.
It doesn’t take much to figure out how this is going to play out. Akin will lose the election, blame the GOP for not supporting him and claim that it was a conspiracy to keep a good conservative from winning. The GOP will point to wins by Cruz, Fischer, etc. and claim that Akin was radioactive after the legitimate rape comments and should have stepped aside. In the end, McCaskill will be the senator from Missouri and casting votes for more contraception and more liberalized abortion.
We had a President accused of rape and molestation. He dropped his trousers and exposed himself to a state employee, Paula Jones, and he lied under oath and had his law license suspended. He was impeached yet he remained in office. Not only that, his current favorability rating is 65%.
We had a Democrat congresssman who had a homosexual prostitution ring being run out of his house. He is still serving in Congress.
Because the subject is "rape" Akin must withdraw from running? Did Akin commit a crime? Give me a break. You are part of the looney left and its double standards.
You know what? I’m marveling at the obliviousness it takes to compare getting picked on by the national party to rape within days after one of our ambassadors might actually have been raped, pre or post mortem. I’m calling it obliviousness, because it’s not nice to call a Congressman’s wife a vile, heartless, self-pitying harpy unless you know for sure she’s smart and well-informed enough to know better. And at this point, I tend to doubt that. I don’t think anybody on that campaign’s all that bright, politically, and I don’t think they’re listening to anybody but themselves, least of all to God. Jesus glorified could show up in their living room and tell them Himself “It’s over. You really are not going to replace that funding, let alone win this election. I have other plans for you.” and they’d tell him “Get behind me, Satan!”
Exactly what was the violation of reasonable sensibilities he's guilty of, that made him a "lost cause?"
It seems to me the only thing that makes him a "lost cause" is allies that want to lynch him for not meeting the approval of his opposition.
Oh is opposition DOES approve of him. Heartily. The majority of Democrats in Missouri thought he should stay in the race and the majority of Republicans in Missouri thought he should drop out after his bout of idiocy.
But he thinks he is God’s candidate for the Senate - and his wife/campaign staffer thinks not funding him is “rape” perhaps even “legitimate” rape.
So I guess they also distanced themselves from his apology, right???
What is so hard about saying "we don't agree with his statement and we understand that he has apologized". Is that too hard for these bright party bosses or are they really the party of stupid???

Nobody said all conservatives or all liberal Republicans are on the same side. It is a fact, however, that those who called for Akin’s withdrawal didn’t come only from the liberal wing of the party. It’s dishonest to keep talking as if only GOP-e who wants him withdraw.
When Torricelli was going to face certain defeat in New Jersey - they pulled out Lautenberg to replace him at the last minute - in direct opposition to New Jersey law!
He is now Senator Lautenberg.
So the issue isn't so much that Akin isn't as bad as Clinton or Frank - it is that he is an unelectable as Torricelli - but not as smart, and not as principled.

And that is exactly how the Rep e wanted it to turn out. What exactly is so inappropriate about Akin’s comments about rape that warrant him being removed from the ticket? Did he say he supports rape? Do you even know the context of how the subject came up?

He is your candidate, YOU support him. His wife and son can use the paycheck. It might be their last one for awhile.

That's funny because he's not being beaten to death by it and he's the one who said it. So grow a stick and take down your white flag.
He has to put his ego aside and do what’s right to advance the conservative cause, otherwise we will lose the seat plain and simple.
He has. He's staying. And he intends to win the seat. And it will be a seat that leans to the right and fights for freedom --

Who ordered this “Code Red” on Akin? There were talking point memos sent from the National Republican Senatorial Committee suggesting language to urge Akin to drop out. Political consultants were ordered to stay away from Akin or lose future business with GOP committees. Operatives were recruited to set up a network of pastors to call Akin to urge him to get out. Money has changed hands to push him off the plank. It is disgraceful. From the spotlights of political offices and media perches, it may appear that the demand for Akin’s head is universal in the party. I assure you it is not. There is a vast, but mostly quiet army of people who have an innate sense of fairness and don’t like to see a fellow political pilgrim bullied. If Todd Akin loses the Senate seat, I will not blame Todd Akin. He made his mistake, but was man enough to admit it and apologize. I’m waiting for the apology from whoever the genius was on the high pedestals of our party who thought it wise to not only shoot our wounded, but run over him with tanks and trucks and then feed his body to the liberal wolves. It wasn’t just Todd Akin that was treated with contempt by the thinly veiled attack on Todd Akin. It was all the people who have faithfully knocked doors, made calls, and made sacrificial contributions to elect Republicans because we thought we were welcome in the party. Todd Akin owned his mistake. Who will step up and admit the effort being made to discredit Akin and apologize for the sleazy way it’s been handled?
I’ve always believed and still do, that if you don’t honor your friendships, you don’t honor yourself. And I consider Todd a friend. So I will join Todd as often as I can, in his fight for our Party’s pro-life policies, traditional marriage and our efforts to rein in the massive expansion of government under President Obama. Todd is being systematically scourged for one thing he said. Is that more important than what Claire McCaskill has DONE over her 6 years in the Senate? If you’d like to join the fight, and help defeat a Democrat Senator standing in the way of a conservative majority, I encourage you to join me. The party has decided it won’t help. In fact, it has decided that it will try to cut off the supply lines to Akin to pressure him to exit and let the party bosses overturn the voters of Missouri and pick their own candidate. If this can happen to Todd Akin, who is next?
I’ve heard the talk of new deadlines and the nonsense about the Republican Party running a 3rd party candidate, but I am no longer listening to that noise. The idea that our Party would continue to play games behind the scenes and feed the Democrats make-believe narrative of the GOP’s fictional war on women is equally ridiculous. Now is the time to focus on electing a conservative Senate Majority. And if the NRSC and RNC and the money-rich PACS won’t help Todd Akin get us to the majority, then we’ll do it without them. And his seat will not have been sold to the highest bidder, but obtained by the highest principles.
Yes I am aware of where FR ios hosted. That doesn’t change my mind about CA. We should invest a dime there in the senate campaign or in any other race where the Dem is the incumbent. CA is gone forever. It is only going to get worse. CA is the canary in the coal mine.
Sure, we can confront, but the public tends to believe what it`s told to believe.. and when the dominant media gives them a constant drumbeat of, “Believe this!” and “Believe that!”... those narratives stick. One needs look no further than the coverage of the DNC as an illustration.
Americans aren`t nearly as free- or critical-thinking as they fancy themselves. They wait for cues from another source, and whoever gets at them most wins.
Another area is messaging. One thing the dems do well is spell out issues in small, simple, personal bites for voters to easily digest. Republicans, on the other hand, load them up with deep, technical, long-view data, leaving the voters (face it.. not the brightest group in history) overwhelmed.
Especially Connie Mack -- he's 10 points down in a losing cause. He should resign so that someone else can be appointed who would win that race.
