Sure, we can confront, but the public tends to believe what it`s told to believe.. and when the dominant media gives them a constant drumbeat of, “Believe this!” and “Believe that!”... those narratives stick. One needs look no further than the coverage of the DNC as an illustration.
Americans aren`t nearly as free- or critical-thinking as they fancy themselves. They wait for cues from another source, and whoever gets at them most wins.
Another area is messaging. One thing the dems do well is spell out issues in small, simple, personal bites for voters to easily digest. Republicans, on the other hand, load them up with deep, technical, long-view data, leaving the voters (face it.. not the brightest group in history) overwhelmed.
