Chicago Teachers Vote to Continue Strike By STEPHANIE BANCHERO

The Chicago public school teachers strike entered its second week after the teachers union declined Sunday to call off a week-long walkout that has catapulted the city into the national debate over teacher evaluations and job security.

Only hours earlier, Chicago Teachers Union officials had trumpeted new concessions they said they had extracted from Mayor Rahm Emanuel during talks to settle the strike that started last Monday and has canceled classes for 350,000 students in the nation's third largest district.

The vote to continue the strike came Sunday night by the union's governing body, the house of delegates, after its members looked over the tentative deal negotiated by city and union leaders. The proposed contract had been finalized earlier in the day, giving the 700-member group little time to digest its details.

Union president Karen Lewis said delegates were "not happy" with the agreement and told union membership they needed a day to consult with rank-and-file teachers.

The delegates will meet again on Tuesday. "They would like it to be a lot better for us," she said.

Ms. Lewis said the earliest students could be back in school is Wednesday.

The vote came a day after the union sent out a statement late Saturday highlighting its successes in the talks, including scaling back the mayor's attempt to base 40% of teacher evaluations on student test scores. The tentative deal would base only 30% on student test scores, according to the union, a ratio already dictated by state law.

Good. The more they piss off the parents, the more unlikely a democratic high turnout will occur(I think).

Yes, it’s for the children — because the schools are so bad that every day the kids don’t have to attend, their IQ goes up 2 points.

I happened to be downtown when they were marching in their little red shirts. You should have heard the stuff I was shouting at them while they marched. Haven’t had that much fun with my clothes on for quite some time.

The strike upended a district in which the vast majority of students are poor and minority. It also raised the concerns of parents who worried not just about their kids’ education but their safety. Chicago’s gang violence has spiked this year, with scores of shootings reported throughout a long, bloody summer and bystanders sometimes caught in the crossfire.

The district staffed more than 140 schools with non-union workers and central office employees so students who are dependent on school-provided meals would have a place to eat breakfast and lunch. But most parents refused to leave their children at unfamiliar schools where they would be thrown together with kids and supervising adults they may never have met.

Good for them! I hope they stay out until the folks get wise to their tactics and move to outlaw the union.

As soon as the union feels threatened the strike will end.

Union thugs. While I don’t believe any of give two beans for Rham - he is a communist jerk. And in some ways, we might even be gloating that he is getting a taste of his own medicine. But that being said - as bad as the students of the Chicago Schools perform - the only thing worse is what these selfish teachers are doing.

It is criminal what the Teacher’s Union is doing.

In a statement, Mayor Rahm Emanuel blasted the teachers and the union for failing to end the strike and said he plans to file an injunction to force the strike to end and get kids back to school.

“I will not stand by while the children of Chicago are played as pawns in an internal dispute within a union. This was a strike of choice and is now a delay of choice that is wrong for our children. Every day our kids are kept out of school is one more day we fail in our mission: to ensure that every child in every community has an education that matches their potential,” Emanuel said.

“I have instructed the City’s Corporation Counsel to work with the General Counsel of Chicago Public Schools to file an injunction in circuit court to immediately end this strike and get our children back in the classroom.” the mayor said. “This continued action by union leadership is illegal on two grounds – it is over issues that are deemed by state law to be non-strikable, and it endangers the health and safety of our children...While the union works through its remaining issues, there is no reason why the children of Chicago should not be back in the classroom as they had been for weeks while negotiators worked through these same issues.”

Emanuel, your filthy leftist Party has continually embraced the greedy socialist unions. Enjoy what you have created or join with the American taxpayers and children and FIRE ALL OF THEM! Then hire some people who can teach kids and are not afraid to be evaluated. The only people who fear appraisals are the incompetents.
