At the FReeper Canteen!
C'mon and take a break ! Walk on over to the water cooler and lets chat. Post your thoughts, opinions, news of the day, rantings, ravings, pontificates, hypothesis, hyperboles, your soap box cause, your mantra, your baggage, your garbage, your blogging, your secrets, whatever you feel would make talk around the water cooler real interesting!
Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly.

A man in a Florida Supermarket tries to buy a half a head of lettuce.
The very young produce assistant tells him that they only sell whole heads.
The man persists and asks to see the manager.
The boy says he'll ask his manager about it.
Walking into the backroom the boy says to the manager, "Some ####### wants to buy a half a head of lettuce", as he finishes his sentence, he turns to find the man standing right behind him, so he adds "and THIS gentleman has kindly offered to buy the other half".
The manager approved the deal, and the man went on his way.
Later the manager said to the boy "I was impressed with the way you got yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who can think on their feet. Where are you from son?"
"Canada, Sir" replied the boy.
"Well why did you leave Canada?" the manager asked.
"Sir, there's nothing but prostitutes and hockey players up there", said the boy.
"Really" said the manager, "My wife is from Canada".
"No way" said the boy, "who'd she play for?"

Legged Squad Support System (LS3)
LS3 is a dynamic robot designed to go anywhere Soldiers and Marines go on foot. Each LS3 will carry up to 400 lbs of gear and enough fuel for missions covering 20 miles and lasting 24 hours. LS3 will not need a driver, because it will automatically follow a leader using computer vision or travel to designated locations using sensing and GPS. The development of LS3 will take 30 months, with first walk out scheduled for 2012. The development of LS3 is being funded by DARPA and the US Marine Corps.

~September 14th 1812 Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner - 198 years ago~

The actual flag flown over Fort McHenry. 30 by 42 feet and costing $405.90 the flag was made from 400 yards of wool bunting. The 15 stars each measured two feet from point to point.
Please Stand For Our National Anthem.....
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

In honor of my father who tried but failed to get in the Naval Air Force after Pearl Harbor, but still impressed the U.S. Navy enough to get commissioned as an officer on a workhorse vessel which saw action in the Philipines, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and in the postwar occupation of Japan, I post:
The Naval Hymn
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep.
Oh hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea! Amen.
Eternal Father, lend Thy grace To
those with wings who fly thro' space,
Thro wind and storm, thro' sun and rain,
Oh bring them safely home again.
Oh Father, hear an humble prayer,
For those in peril in the air! Amen.
Oh Trinity of love and pow'r,
Our brethren shield in danger's hour,
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them where so e'er they go.
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea! Amen.

Aloha, Hawaii...((HUGS))...I love your cheer.
I was so proud of Rick...he just took our flag away from those creeps. And it was back when most everyone loved our country.

Thanks so much, Biglook! Yes, I've seen it before but it does indeed bear replaying. That was in a time when Patriotism was still "uncool" - but Rick Monday didn't subscribe to the "conventional wisdom" of the day. Lots of men and women have contributed to our Nation's Freedom without serving in our Armed Forces. I submit that Rick Monday is one of them.
