School was out in Chicago on Monday and parents scrambled for child care after public school teachers staged the first strike in a quarter century over reforms sought by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and endorsed by President Barack Obama's administration.
Some 29,000 teachers and support staff in the nation's third largest school district were involved, leaving parents of 350,000 students between kindergarten and high school age to find alternative supervision.

I suspect that the “parent” in Chicago will hardly notice a difference in what the children are learning this week.
I’ll bet you not half the kids in Chicago schools have two parents at home, not even if you count the ones with two dads. And they will vote Democrat, the same way the unions are supporting Obama after he screwed them on the Keystone pipeline. Democrats always circle the wagons on election day.
Wher’mah gonna put mah babies!?
“Wouldnt it be great if these 350,000 kids started getting homeschooled by their parents “
I don’t know. Considering how Chicago parents generally vote, their influence may be no better than the teachers’ influence.
I won’t be looking for the Chicago Teacher’s lingerie calendar any time soon. If they cut their caloric intake they would have extra money for retirement and healthcare.
Both parents working and can’t afford day care? Not even for a temporary time?
I didn’t say anything about welfare.......those parents are home. The article was highlighting those who couldn’t manage daycare. I don’t know, I think it’s different now for parents. Big house, two cars, multiple cell phones, ipads, ipods, acrylic nails, can’t afford daycare.
“Basically the teachers are saying the kids are too dumb to pass and they refuse to be held accountable.”
They are more right than wrong. The great educational experiment that began in the 50s has failed. Failure was covered up for years, but NCLB and similar testing schemes revealed the truth.
Could perfect teachers do better? Probably a little. But also probably, not much.
The results in CPS and elsewhere are (mostly) not the teachers fault.
Well, it is Chicago, and its yoots will do what they do best: killing each other.
"2" parents?? In Chicago??? ROFL!!!!
Government whores....
That bunch sure looks underfed, don’t they?
Brutal looking bunch. I’m sure obama could find a spot for them in his administration.
Oh noes!!! Somebody done turned off the automatic daycare machine!!!
Somebody gonna have to feed those chilrens from their stash!!
The picture of these yelping parasitic sows is telling. These shirking losers “work” for a few hours per day and only “work” about 7 1/2 months per year...and they want a 30% raise. Do a Reagan and fire all of them. Kids being taught by these communist pin-heads is child abuse.
October Surprise.
Obama comes in to save the day and it only will cost the US taxpayer $1,000 per family per year over the next 10 years.
Granted, $800 of that is a kickback to the DNC.
The head of the teachers union in Chicago thinks that it’s not the teacher’s job to teach? What should they be evaluated on......physical fitness?
So, the ratio of students to teachers and support staff is 12 to one. I doubt very much that the student teacher ratio is much less than 24 to one. In other words, in Chicago the public schools probably employ close to one “support staff” for every teacher. And therein lies one of the problems facing public education in this country. As with many other functions that have been assumed by government, it has become massively inefficient.
LOL!
