Because of the importance of the US market, chocolate manufacturers in Switzerland are submitting to Uncle Sams intrusion in their factories but they are not happy about it.
The fact that a foreign authority is involved in our Swiss businesses is unseemly, Daniel Bloch, of Chocolats Camille Bloch, told Handelszeitung, the German-language business journal.
The newspaper has discovered that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to inspect 21 chocolate factories and 18 dairies in Switzerland.
The move is part of the implementation of Americas Food Safety Modernization Act, new legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama last year that aims, among other things, to combat bioterrorism.
...
the planned inspections appear to go well beyond health issues to include such details as sales, ownership, employees and the size of company buildings.
We ask ourselves, what is the real reason for the FDA inspections

Mooshelle says: no Godiva chocolate for Americans.
Its the ‘free traitors’ that set this up.
They despise sovereignty of nations, including our own.
Well, the Swiss don’t want a fight, so I guess they’ll be willing to lose their US sales in order to not ruffle the Obamas’ feathers.
But... if the Obama’s take away my right to eat chocolate I will not be at all happy.
The fact that the FDA exists is unseemly.
Hands off the Godiva guys.
The FDA should be so fussy about the ‘food’ that comes out of China!
Instead when plastic was found in pet food ingredients, an acceptable level of melamine was set.
What's to stop other countries from using this as a precedent to "inspect" USA businesses?
For a few more months.
Then the civil suits can begin.
And the discovery process.
Free traders want free trade. These intrusions are clearly anti-trade.
The Ministry has increased the chocolate ration from 25 grams to 15 grams per week...
Is that "inspect" as in SWAT-style "down on the ground m*therf*cker or we'll blow your f*cking head off!", or rather the more fun-trip Obama Mandarin-style "inspect" as in "oh, could I sample a few more of those delicious truffel pralines, and please do send a few boxes to our five-star hotel post-haste"?
If we can prevent just one more child from dying as a result eating uninspected chocolate, then it is worth the inconvenience. /S
I guess that's one way for government employees to get their holiday shopping in Europe done.
Why don’t the Swiss just say bugger off?
It’s our chocolate, we will make it the way we want, you don’t like it buy something else.
Mooschelle vs. The Swiss... should be interesting
The Food Safety and Modernization Act was passed with a huge majority in the Senate (73-25) and sizeable majority in Congress (215-144). Its the kind of big government that Republicans like to vote for too.
If you believe that having FDA bureaucrats running around the world visiting food factories, having the FDA require family farms to implement “food safety procedures” or giving the FDA unilateral power to shut-down food makers is going to lead to cheaper food or won’t politicize the food industry, as we have seen with housing, healthcare and education - then good luck!
If the Swiss don’t mind ruining a batch of chocolate, they should feel free to show these inspectors the chocolate from the very bottom of the vat.
I thought our al-Qaeda member, sleeper cell, president didn’t want the USA to be so arrogant! This seems pretty arrogant to me.
Or maybe Odumbo Mugumbo wants to be known as the chocolate president aka NO, LA.
First up, China. Want to sell widgets or computer chips to China? Sorry, you will need an inspection.
