Eight years after California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said the push for legalizing same-sex marriage was too much, too fast, too soon, the Democratic Party will make history Tuesday when it is expected to be the first major party to endorse same-sex marriage in its platform.
While the plank packs no legal power, it marks a cultural milestone.
Another important societal cue that things are shifting, said Amy Simon, an Oakland pollster who is working for advocates who want to legalize gay marriage in Maine and Washington. As people are working through their conflicting feelings on this, they're looking for cues and this is another one.
The platform declaration could spark political blowback, and one of the nation's leading opponents of same-sex marriage already is trying to make it an issue in pivotal swing states that have passed laws codifying marriage as a union of one man and one woman.
By doing this, the Democratic Party is basically telling voters in places like North Carolina and Florida that they're a bunch of bigots, said consultant Frank Schubert, the strategist behind California's Proposition 8 and similar campaigns to bar gay unions in four states where marriage is on the ballot in November.
The National Organization for Marriage began airing radio ads last week in North Carolina, targeting religious African Americans.

My guess is Romney will win handily and they know it. The DNC narrative will be thatthanks to Romney’s “toxic rhetoric””angry conservatives” turned out in “record numbers” to vote while “frightened” Democrats, independents and moderate Republicans stayed home, possibly “hiding.”
We can help by telling the truth: Obama’s record speaks for itself and folks don’t want a repeat performance.
“The platform declaration could spark political blowback”
Looks like they mean it.
Great point.
Black and Hispanics must be good with gay marriage and free abortion on demand.
A certain line from “Tropic Thunder” comes to mind. The DNC just went Full, well, you know...
If they are going to go down, they want to go down in rainbow colored flames? It’s the chance of a lifetime to be a spectacle.
Even in Democratic California! The Left needed the Nine Circus to thwart the will of the voters.
Yep. Republican 'Forces of Darkness', 'evil GOP scheming', 'vile rhetoric', 'racist backlash', 'Wall Street money', 'Tea Party fear mongering', 'Birther swiftboating', 'racist bitter clingers', etc., ad infinitum...
The DNC and the leftstream press will say all that and more, to excuse the stunning loss of their pathetic empty suit. They'll never admit the obvious. America gave Obama a chance, and he royally blew it.
**major party to endorse same-sex marriage in its platform.**
Adding to the plank in their platform that supports abortion.
God will be the judge.
Most people vote for their economic interest, especially those who constantly vote democrat. The electorate may not like parafilia “marriage” legalized but will be over looked in exchange for economic “spread the wealth by force” baloney.
Sorry paraphilia, iPad thinks I am speaking Spanish or something with their spell checker
They want to say that Obama offered America the "brightest future imaginable" for his second term. But the "angry backlash" from "the short-sighted and close-minded" rebuked him.
That won't be the real reason for rejecting Obama's bid for a second term, but that's what the DNC will want to tell us.
Not all Democrats are de facto wards of the state. Those who actually work for a living, and who have been injured by Obama's Marxist policies, are going to have a hard time pulling the lever for him again. They probably remember how much better things were under Clinton and Bush, and are shocked at what a mess Barky's made of the country.
That's where he's going to lose the most votes.
The truly parasitic class will of course vote for more unrestrained theft and redistribution of wealth. It's how they eat. Judging by the latest pictures from the Dem convention, they're the only one's who've shown up.
Most of my family are Dems, but they're all hard working professionals with families, homes, 401Ks, stocks, college tuition payments, etc. They're all tax paying stakeholders, and none of them are smiling about November.
None of them have Obama stickers on their cars, either, and unlike the last go-round, none of them have emailed me a single word about Obama.
I'm telling you, Barky's toast.
Guess I was wrong. Nothing "historic" about gay marriage. Not even in ancient Rome.
"I didn't vote for Romney" gives them a pass they can live with.
I doubt it, black voters will not vote for Romney, and white social conservatives would vote for him anyway, nobody will do anything differently.
Very true, which is why, of course, they are doing it.
(The majority of black Christians do not support gay marriage.)
I hate to say it, but I don’t think that will matter to them, nor will it matter that Barack has been an absolutely disaster to blacks.
