Somewhere in the world there are troops who can appreciate how the sounds of Chopin make life appear more tolerable.
Brother and sister, ages 9 and 4, win hero award for saving mom
August 30, 2012 12:00 am Jamar Younger and Veronica M. Cruz Arizona Daily Star
On the morning of July 13, Kevin DeMent, 9, and his younger sister Tayla displayed a calmness not usually seen in children their age.
Their mother, Melody DeMent, suffered an accidental gunshot wound at their east-side home after a gun fell out of a safe and discharged while she was reaching for some documents.
The bullet ricocheted off the safe twice and struck Melody DeMent in the upper chest, said Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
The children ran to a neighbor’s home for help while their father, Scott DeMent, put pressure on his wife’s chest as she bled profusely.
On Wednesday, the two children and their neighbor, Asya Bakiyeva, received a Hero’s Award from the Tucson Fire Department for their quick response, which is credited with saving DeMent’s life.
The award was presented during a ceremony at Station No. 12, 250 S. Harrison Road
“I just know God had a hand in it. There’s no way I would’ve survived,” said Melody DeMent, who operates a chiropractic practice with her husband.
The incident happened in the 9700 block of East Hollow Place.
Kevin and 4-year-old Tayla ran to get help from a neighbor who was a firefighter, but he wasn’t home. So they went to Bakiyeva, a phlebotomist at Northwest Medical Center, who helped the children’s father apply pressure to Dement’s wound until paramedics arrived.
“I got there and saw the husband on the phone,” Bakiyeva said. “I went and grabbed some clothes and, as soon as I saw the blood, I put clothes on the wound.”
Tucson fire Capt. Bruce Avram said people usually overreact during those situations, which can make it harder for paramedics.
“Everything went right from the 911 operator. She was able to give instructions. The cops got us in there quick. The little boy was pointing to the right place,” said Avram, who responded with paramedics from Station 12.
Kevin, a Boy Scout, credited his faith in God for helping him stay calm during the chaotic time. But when he found out his mother would be OK, joy overtook him.
“I felt like I was going to fall to the ground and cry tears of joy,” he said.

Good evening Mayor & thank you for our daily bread.
Hope your having an extended & enjoyable weekend! *Hugs*
Astrologers call it the Saturn Return. At the age of 29 to 30, Saturn returns to its position in the birth chart. Saturn only gives back what you put into it. If you work hard, then at the end of that 30 year period, you get a payoff. If you dont work hard, you get failure. In the period of 1839 to 1840, Robert Schumann and Frederic Chopin, both born in 1810, turned out their best work. For Schumann it was the year of his best songs and his greatest output of chamber music. For Chopin, it was the year he turned out one masterpiece after another.
For Fred, it didnt start auspiciously. He and the French female novelist George Sand took off for an idyllic winter on the Spanish island of Majorca or so they thought. First, the locals had a problem with an unmarried couple living in sin, so Fred, George and her two children from her marriage were forced to set up camp in a cold, dank former monastery. Then Majorca suffered its rainiest winter in decades, making Freds tuberculosis worse.
To add insult to injury, the customs officials in Majorca held Chopins expensive Pleyel piano hostage to la mordida, the bite, an old Spanish tradition that predates Mexico. George eventually paid half the ransom to get the piano released. Once the piano was safely back in Freds possession, Chopin launched into the most productive period of his life.
Robert Schumann wrote of Chopins preludes: Here are sketches, studies, ruins, eagles feathers, all strangely intermingled. In all of them one recognizes Chopin by his pauses and by his impetuous respiration. Here is the boldest, proudest poet-soul of his time. To be sure, the book contains some morbid, feverish, repellent traits, but everyone who looks will find something to enchant him.
Fred had been working on those preludes for years, and now it was time to get them ready for publication. Technically, a prelude is an introduction to another piece of music. Bach had written preludes and fugues in each key, and the prelude was intended to set the table for the fugue. For Chopin, these preludes were short, standalone pieces, one in each key, each one a gem.
Well start with the two preludes with no key signature.
Chopin always said his favorite composer was Bach, but one searches hard for signs of the German master in Chopins output. This is the only piece where a link to Bach is obvious. Its a short, joyous, difficult piece, with tricky phrasing in the right hand.
Chopin: Prelude in C, Op. 28/1
Classical music lovers like to play a game called dittersdorfing, which means to guess the composer of a piece. It comes from Karl Dittersdorf, a contemporary of Haydn, whose music sounds a lot like Haydn, but isnt quite up to Haydns standards. When you play this piece, the first guess as to the composer is always Stravinsky, followed by Prokofiev and Scriabin. People are shocked when you say its Chopin.
Like the C Major Prelude, its only one page. The right hand has to be played very lightly. As the piece progresses, it becomes obvious that its really not in any key at all. Chopin chickens out at the end, forcing an ending in A minor, and it might have been more effective had he just let it fade into nothingness. One great pianist of a century ago said it was like coming home to an empty house after the funeral of your wife and children. Thats an exaggeration, but the bleakness and emptiness are obvious. This is a very modern piece.
Wife said some 60’s sound good, anything to lighten our Mind. Actually have spent time in the Word today leaves a good feeling.
