GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)
RedState ^ | Tuesday August 28, 2012 | Erick Erickson

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

Ok, I understand what you’re saying. Romney has a lot in common with George Bush and his “compassionate conservatism”. There is a difference between both Romney and Bush and Barack Obama, and I just came to this realization this week.

The difference is one of motivation, why they do what they do, why Romney thought that Romneycare was a good thing for people or why Bush expanded medicare drug coverage. They truly believe in social justice and think that they are doing the “right” thing.

Obamacare isn’t aimed at fixing health care, covering the uninsured or controlling costs. The goal of Obamacare is to unionize 1/5 of the work force under a single government union, the SEIU, and secure power for the Democrat Party into the millennium.

Delusion is unattractive. You miss every point, don’t you? Lost in minutiae, over a few Paul delegates in a virtual sea of Romney delegates, during a coux you totally miss the house on fire against all conservatives. LOL!

Please poke eye holes in that sack you have there over your head.

Mr. RomneyCARE has LOT in common with Obama.
He HATES conservatives.
He LOVES himself.
He LOVES RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE.
He LOVES Taxes, TARP, and Sharia.
He will do ANYTHING to stop a conservative agenda.

What the heck was the difference?

What is the matter with you? Join us Einsteins who decide between two candidates by focusing on the similarities between two candidates!!!!! Resistance is futile!!!!

We gotta recruit Newt to be chairman of the new Tea Party.

Amen to that.

All the action seems to be on Malkin's Twitter account. Apparently video's coming soon of a shout-out between Blackwell and Supoopoo.

Would you consider calling the new party the Grassroots Party to appeal to more people. The Tea Party, unfortunately, is always considered an arm of the republicscam party.

These “grassroots activists” who caused this whole mess are Ron Paul supporters who lied about their allegiance in order to get delegate slots.

Absolutely correct. Paul is a lunatic snake-oil salesman with a lot of deluded and/or dishonest Paul-bots.

The silver lining, however, is that his duplicitous behavior has ripped the scab off the festering GOP-e sore, revealed Willard's true colors for all to see, and may, MAY (hopefully) finally light the (short) fuse on a new TRULY CONSERVATIVE third (no, make that SECOND) party for 2016. (IF we survive the Romney-Obama kabuki show.)

Sorry for the mixed metaphors ;)

That’s incorrect. Check out Malkin’s twitter feed. Colorado delegation claims to have enough signatures for a floor vote.

I’d like nothing better at this point to see a mass Conservative delegate walk-out from that corrupt cesspool of a convention.

Wait a minute - Delegates gathering signatures for a floor fight and mention of the rule change on the floor between 3 & 5...not over yet and many might force the issue even if its not formally done...

Floor fight still a good possiblility!

This type of change will have a great impact down the road. ABO's - let us take note - imagine how conservatives will get to sit at the back of the bus and shut up if and when he is elected. And the truly perverse thing is that we have to rid ourselvs of Obama.

Conservatives are to the republicans what blacks are to the democrats: voters taken for granted and then poorly served.

Not sure how to reply to your question..I am just a nothing with a huge love for America and a very sad nothing to see what's happening to Her, between obama and romney.

So frankly call it what you want as long as it is run by Sarah who is the ONLY politician I can trust for millions of reason but mainly her integrity and with proof that she walks the walk with her record.

The tea party has a lot of different branches and some of them were soooo romney oriented during the primary that I don't know what to think of them anymore. After all we have romney because they did not fight for Newt or even Sarah to help her run.

So whatever name as long as Sarah runs it and win with it - I am in! Let's send the republican party and its rinos the way of the Whigs.

What are the chances of it succeeding though? If the Rules Committee voted 78-14 Yay, are the numbers going to be that much more in our favor on the floor? Aren’t the majority of the delegates already Romneybots anyway?
