Karl Rove predicts historic loss for Todd Akin

TAMPA, Fla.— Karl Rove on Monday predicted Rep. Todd Akin will lose by the widest margin of any Republican candidate in modern history if he remains in his Missouri Senate race against Sen. Claire McCaskill.

“What he said was indefensible and the way he handled it made it worse,” Rove told POLITICO’s Mike Allen at the first POLITICO Playbook Breakfast at the Republican National Convention.

“This is a program that he taped and obviously he saw nothing wrong with it in his tape,” Rove said, pointing out that Akin didn’t respond to the taped interview until two days later.

Rove said Akin has no option other than getting out of the race.

But, hey.. we must move on... Akin has amassed almost $100K (vs McCaskill`s multi-million$), and he`s picking up broad support (among democrats). Plus, he`s dead set on winning (2nd place).

For crying out loud!...then all that is required for a "historic loss" of a Republican is that they are lured,(or by a lapse in judgement) into saying something stupid. Aiken made a quick and sincere apology for the error, but evidently that amounts to nothing, and that the U.S. is to be punished with the reelection of Ma McCaskill? Even what Aiken said is, as far as I can tell is a Republican pro-life stance.

If the people of Mo go ahead and re-elect Ms McCaskill because of a dumbass statement, then I think we are truly lost.

Must I find the nearest welfare office and sign up....just because voters think that stupid statments trump freedom and liberty?

One other thing: Rove predictions are NOT set in stone. They are predictions, no more, no less...and are rendered from an "establishment Republican" perspective. He actually has no more of an idea who will win in Mo as I have.

Just to clarify the discussion, can you tell me again, WHY Akin had to apologize?

Look, if I was a voter in MO and it is Akin vs McCaskill on election day, I will certainly vote for Akin. However, I still think he needs to step aside because, like it or not, he is damaged goods. He cannot raise enough money to overcome the onslaught coming his way over the next 80 days or so. She will be able to put up 20 ads for every one of his. There is no magic wand here. While all the GOP should rally behind him, for whatever reason most are choosing not to.

The "apology" was for the mention of a perceived medical condition where there is some kind of physical mechanism possessed by women which would prevent pregnancy during extreme trauma like a violent rape.

There came forth several "experts" who said that this is not something that happens, and as proof, a lot of women get pregnant via rape.

I personally think that Aiken's statement about "legitimate" rape could be at the bottom of the controversy. Many cries of "rape" are not that. They start out on a consensual basis, but sometime during, or after the encounter, something changes, and the encounter suddenly becomes "rape"...if you know what I mean. Something like this would naturally cause considerable consternation among a lot of people, and especially, "progressive women"

If Akin loses I want to see EACH Akin supporter write their own mea culpa which would include the admission that not all people who want him to drop out are ESTABLISHMENT types. That some of us WERE GENUINELY OFFENDED by what he said and are bonafide conservatives too.

No mea culpa is necessary when one fights on the side of life (and Christ). The following straightforward quote explains why most people are upset with Akin (you either understand what he's saying or you don't):

Karl Rove is an establishment Republican. They want Akin to step aside so that they can put one of their own in his place. Have you noticed it's the anti-conservative Republican that keep talking about it.

They want Akin to step aside so they can replace him with another pro-life conservative Republican who can beat the Democrat.

The Democrats want Akin to remain in this race. If you want Akin to remain, you're enabling a Democrat.
