Although some on the right were disappointed that Romney did not pursue this, he was wise not to. This was not the right time. The right time is during a debate. At least one moderator will find Romney's bait irresistible, and I am guessing it will be CNN's Candy Crowley. What follows is a proposed strategy for the Hofstra University debate on October 16. My guess is that Romney has pretty much figured it out already, thus the remark in Michigan:
CC: Governor Romney, in Michigan you told a crowd of supporters, "No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate." Don't you believe that the birth certificate President Obama presented last year is valid?
MR: I have questions about its validity, but that is not why I raised the issue.
CC: Why did you, then? Weren't you afraid that some people, minorities and immigrants especially, will see that as a subtle attack on President Obama because of his race?
MR: Candy, not at all. No one ever asked to see Jesse Jackson's birth certificate when he ran for president or Al Sharpton's when he ran. And they are both black, both proud representatives of the president's party. I raised that issue because of the unique uncertainty surrounding Obama's early years. I know I was born and raised in Michigan. I said as much. I would ask you or the president himself to tell us where he spent the first year of his life.
CC: Mr. President?
BO: Um, um, I am not sure I understand why this question is relevant.
CC: Governor?
MR: It is relevant because President Obama built his 2008 campaign, indeed his very persona, around the fact that he was born into a happy multicultural home. . .

That debate will never happen, because Romney will never go beyond saying he was joking...and he will stress that he firmly believes Obama was born in the U.S. Why? Because to start delving into Birtherism would cost him...oh...I don’t know...5-10 million votes. The truth is only a very small percentage of voters want to hear a debate on whether Obama is real American or not. It’s a real loser issue for Romney.
I will continue to be a birther until Kapiolani releases
certifiable records of Obumbo’s birth there.
His mother may have been a sleazy whore, and his real father may be unknown, but it has nothing to do with his qualifying to be POTUS, does it?
We all know that Obumbo, the Commie, was and is mentored by Communist of the lowest order.
Everyone should direct their energy to find out if Obozo was really born on US soil. That seems to be the only ace for us birthers.
I have to agree with nick on this one.
Not only tasteless but did you call Clinton a whore?
Or any of the other men who have slept around?
Or Obama's father?
Why is that women who sleep with more than one man is a whore but a man who does the same, is not one?
It's a antiquated term that men use to lower women.
So even if what you say is true about Obama's mother, it is rude to talk about someone's mother that way.
And going with your logic his father should be labeled a whore as well.
I don't think that is correct. Several months ago, his son referenced the birth certificate and was asked to apologize. Why would Romney even go there in the middle of a close race if he didn't know something now that he didn't know back then? Notice that Romney didn't apologize this time around. He blew it off as a joke. Romney is too smart to make a gaff like that at this stage of the game. Something's up. Buying time until the reveal. That's probably Trump's surprise trump card. Somehow I don't think the Donald liked being made to look like the fool. Also, Arpaio got an invite to speak at the convention.

And if there's another peep from the left, demand the release of one or both from o'fraud.
Nothing like that will happen at the convention. Democrats would LOVE!! to see Pubbies start talking Birtherism. Letting Arpaio or anybody else go off on a Birther rant at the convention would sink Romney faster than the Titanic. If there were proof about Obama being an alien, it would have been out by now. Forget about the Birther nonsense, and concentrate on legitimately ousting Obama.
His mother was an American.
Even if Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama had been birthed in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House Obama is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.
It's not "unclear" at all. George Romney was born a US citizen to US citizen parents living in Mexico. He didn't need to be "naturalized". George Romney ran for, and was eligible to become the US President.
Thank you both, I appreciate the URLs!
No CNN moderator would present this issue fairly, or allow pursuit once things didnt go Obamas way. But Jack Cashills underlying point matters: given the opportunity, Mitt Romney must be ready to knock this out of the ballpark with a hammer-blow that puts the onus where it belongs on Barack Obama. Here is my fantasy answer, which Romney would have to spew out in one breath before being cut off:
Cathy, this is a distraction, when we need to spend every minute improving the economy and Americas future. Supporters of Hillary Clinton first made Obamas birthplace a political issue in 2008, since a child born overseas with a non-citizen father cannot be President under our Constitution. But the man who created the born in Kenya story is with us tonight Barack Hussein Obama. Mr. Obama do you deny ever stating or writing that you were born in Kenya? Did you write it in your attempted memoir, Journeys in Black & White? Why did your literary agent promote that idea from 1991 through 2007? Mr. Obama, will you, right now, direct the State of Hawaii, Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard Universities to make your records public, and end this question, so we can get back to the countrys business (or the golf course as you frequently prefer)?
The way to handle the question is simple...
‘with all due respect President Obama brought this issue on himself. For over a decade he allowed his book publisher and their publicists to prote him as born in Kenya, apprently to sell more books. I’m proud to be an American, I would never deny that for anything.’
The original post is from the Todd Alin PR school... Easy to screw up and too smart for its own good.
You really think Obama's going to have a problem looking into the camera and saying, "Hawaii?" That's been his story all along.
Stanley Anne was known at Ledbedders (sp??) Bar, Hotel Street, Hawaii.
