Police: All Empire State shooting victims were wounded by officers

New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.

The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.

Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.

The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.

The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

Not calling for disarming them, but perhaps equipping them with revolvers might improve their accuracy..

Give them bean bags as the border patrol gets to use against Mexican narcoterrorists.

Good point. 5 rounds and you are going to make sure you don't miss the first nine shots.

There’s a reason why Dirty Harry carried that big ole Magnum 44 revolver with the 6/7 inch barrel...one ping, and one ping only.

“I carry a full size Kimber 1911...”

Nice piece! Recoil with a good 45 semi does not take the piece off target like it does with a 40 cal, whether it be glock, Walther or others. Assume that might be what you mean when you say ‘too jumpy’...

My ammo preference is 45 ACP, 230 Grain Hydra-Shok...

News reports said glocks...but then with reporters, they could be carrying sawed off shotguns and it would be reported as “Glocks” or “AK-47’s”.

No, it’s not ooops. The perp was hit by seven shots, so most of them found their mark and there were 10 people injured by richochets (possibly even some bullets that had passed through the killer, since some of the injuries were not that serious).

The cops had no knowledge about whether he was planning to pull off an Aurora-style killing (which was also done with a .45, wasn’t it?) and unfortunately, in a situation like that, you have to react as fast as you can and take out the killer.

Incidentally, all the folks here who have been calling for armed theater patrons who would have risen up and started blasting the Aurora killer...you’d have a lot more dead.

Cops at least practice and it sounds like a lot of them hit their marks, but having an exchange of gunfire in a crowded place anywhere is going to result in people other than the target being hit in one way or another, either by stray bullets or by richocheting shots.

It's at the CNN page related to this story. Look in the left-hand margin and click on whatever video link that says, "Shooting Surveillance Video Released."

Gee, a female cop flipping out? That’s unusual:

The clip I saw, the Chief made it through 51 secs without mentioning 9/11. Amazing.

They fired sixteen rounds, hit the suspect five times and had eleven misses. Considering the fact that there were eleven other rounds flying around a crowded street, it’s amazing that only three other people were shot (not counting the six hit by fragments).

That’s it. My Kimbers are weighty enough to absorb the recoil, but that G32 is a real chore to get back-on-point for a double-tap. I have a Docter Red Dot sight on the G32 and it’s a PITA to re-sight for each shot. I don’t like .40cal either; same recoil deal, IMO.

"Well since this story and the subject here is in regards NY, I assumed this is what we were talking about. So the bottom line here is you're incorrect."

Two things here. Your question was ambiguous and improperly framed, that was your 1st error.

Your second mistake was your claiming I made a mistake. I never make mistakes, not ever. In fact I often spend hours contemkplqting what it must feel like to be wrong.

So tell me, what is it like?

...I’d think HPs would be used in that crowded city environment, though.
Me too, as long as you get, and stay, on target.

Mayor Bloomberg needs to practice what he preaches. Gun control begins at the range.

I suspect that the average citizen in Afganistan is much safer that a citizen in the U.S. when confronted by armed police. The ROE in Afghanistan are probably much stricter than in the U.S. where you can be shot dead by a cop for a ‘furtive movement’.

Calls for disarming the police in 3-2-1

Since you brought it up, do you feel police should be subjected to the same gun laws as legitimate law abiding citizens?

I believe they are.

So citizens in NY have same gun rights as do those in government?

Your question was ambiguous and improperly framed, that was your 1st error.

lol....Thanks for that bit of humor.
