The Star’s editorial | GOP can’t avoid Todd Akin — or abortion
Kansas City Star ^ | 8/21/12 | Editorial Staff

They phoned. They wrote. They rebuked him publicly from coast to coast. They cut off funding and support.

Yet Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin didn’t cave. He refused to withdraw by the initial 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline, sticking with his November race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.

His choice means women’s health and abortion remain top issues, causing a debate the GOP had hoped to avoid.

Akin, who says he misspoke when he said “legitimate rape” victims can prevent pregnancy, has a long voting record against abortion in any circumstance.

Akin also is in line with U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, with whom he co-sponsored abortion legislation, in favoring an amendment providing rights to fetuses at the moment of conception. This effectively stops all abortions, including in the cases of rape or incest.

For Republicans objecting to Akin’s misstatements, it gets more complicated at their national convention next week when the final party platform is adopted.

Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney and now-running mate Ryan are on record in support of abortion in cases of rape. Yet, the proposed platform espouses the no-exceptions position held by Akin. In addition, Romney’s positions on abortion have ranged from an early pro-choice posture to the current promises to defund Planned Parenthood and ban abortions.

President Barack Obama clearly stated the difference this week. For him, a rape is a rape. And in a welcome addition, he said it’s wrong for predominantly male lawmakers to make these kinds of health care decisions for women.

Amen.

While the anti-government, free-the-individual GOP often argues against government interference, they are all in for government control and limited access on abortion and birth control.

I just think he would have been wiser to be more guarded during this very important election.

Yet another prime example of the Liberal Media viciously attacking a legitimate Pro Life Conservative candidate for U.S. Senate.

The lib media had nothing to do with Akin's inability to articulate the pro life position. The guy is 65 yo and has been in Congress for 12 years with access to some of the best and brightest relative to research, think tanks, and studies. And yet he stumbles and bumbles like some guy in a bar.

This guy is a lightweight who has set the pro life movement back immensely. Some are just too stubborn to visit reality.

“Akin maybe kicked out of the GOP tomorrow.”

That is a really stupid statement. The GOP cannot kick anybody out. Only voters have that ability. The voters in Missouri will decide on Aiken not the GOPe, and especially not you carpet baggers interfering with Missouri politics.

Aiken properly and legally won the primary. He IS the candidate (as people like to say about Myth Romney the Magic Mormon). Either folks vote for him (Akin) or McRascal. Writein votes don’t work in Missouri. It is too late to mount a third party candidate also. Also, to do so will alienate SOCON Republicans here in Missouri. That could cost Myth this state as well.

America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts — a child — as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters”

Maybe there is a silver lining in all this. Maybe it’s time for another national conversation about the importance of protecting life. Maybe Akin has permitted us to focus on the moral disaster of abortion.

And the GOP and many so-called pro-life conservatives. And Mitt friggin Romney who thinks that this is one of the bandwagons to cling to..

Akin may or may not be, factually wrong, but he is right in the belief that the child - even of a rapist-incest incident, is innocent.

You are pro-life or not. No disclaimers.

The child of rape is still a human being innocent, and not deserving of being horribly murdered.

“Abortion laws and practices are not going to change in the next 10 years, no mater who is elected.”

~ ~ ~

The just divine judgment has started, the economy isn’t going to get better until we turn to God and follow His
ways. He knows what is best for us.

Do you see how important, the man who is President should
be Christian. He needs God’s grace in his soul, we can’t
go four more years without God.

Evil, gravely sinful abortion and sodomy, let us follow
men who legislate for these two abominations. Crazy!!!

And why is that a surprise? Politics is a blood sport. One has to play to win. One has to be competent and shrewd and smart. Akin is none of those and will lose by 10 points in November, and will become a laughing stock and pariah the rest of his life.

Joe Miller in AK; Hoffman in NY-23; Sharron Angle in NV;
Christine O’Donell in DE; Buck in CO; JD Hayworth in AZ and
George Allen in VA were all solid conservatives but lousy politicians and they all lost and now are powerless.

Christine O’Donell in DE; Buck in CO; JD Hayworth in AZ and
George Allen in VA were all for stopping the slaughter as you
call it. Guess what? They ALL LOST because they were lousy politicians. How many babies can they save now after losing?

“when the medical evidence is that the woman can’t ovulate for weeks after trauma”

What happens to the women who were ovulating when they got raped?

Let us hope. Unless he spouts off another Macaca moment. In the meanwhile we lost 6 years having a GOP senator.

Rev. Wright’s Church is a racist cult and is no way Christian. He preaches a false gospel of black liberation theology which really is no better than the Nation of Islam.
