"Top Gun" director Tony Scott fatally jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro on Sunday afternoon, according to Los Angeles police sources.
His body was pulled out of the water by Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard officials.
Investigators found a suicide note in his car, which was parked on the bridge.
Law enforcement sources said several witnesses saw Scott, the brother of director Ridley Scott, climb over a fence on the bridge and jump off.
The coroner's office identified him Sunday evening.
Scott was a respected action-movie director who also made "Enemy of the State," "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "Crimson Tide."

So sad.... he made some good action pics. Prayers for his family.
Live and Die in LA -—One of the best movies ever made. The nasty sleazy underbelly of Los Angeles
I agree.
Catapult.
I don’t know what caused him to do this. Neither do you. But whatever it was, it was sorrowful - whether mental or physical illness he was obviously in pain. To disparage a man on the day of his death just strikes me as wrong. Is there really no compassion nowadays?
One of my faves too. I was unaware Tony Scott directed. Great shots of the Mexican slums. Chris Walken and Denzel Washington about the only black actor I like
Rest in peace Tony!
Prius causes suicide. News at 11:00.
If I drove a Prius, I would also want to jump off a bridge.
Jesus would have helped him.....if he would have asked. Very sad.....suicied is so selfish.
We will find out but>>>
Just bring a decent ladder and you are over that 10ft fence in no time. I would scale it with a rope too so I could get down the other side without breaking a leg. A concrete block (maybe 2) tied to the other end of the rope
A man who has directed action films knows enough to quickly get over that 10 ft fence to where he can jump. He planned this out same as a director plans out a movie. Accounts say there was no hesitation, he moved quickly
Earlier, Scott tried to jump off of a pier but was unsuccessful.
That’s what the updated account says, but I can’t figure out what that means. A pier?
Perhaps he was a closet conservative and couldn’t take the pressure anymore, the guilt, the hiding from his hollywierd friends.
In Hollywood jargon, it means he could not get his desired outcome in one take. Few Hollywod directors have gotten their desired outcome in one take other than One Take Woody Van Dyke.
Seriously?
You don't like James Earl Jones? Samuel L. Jackson? Ving Rhames? Wesley Snipes? Laurence Fishburne? Michael Clarke Duncan? Morgan Freeman? Just for starters... Those are some excellent actors right there.
They may be good and popular actors but I just don't like their on-screen style with Morgan Freeman being the most detestable. I will not see a movie with this overbearing buffoon.
Tony Scott in 2009.
R.I.P.
