Missouri GOP Senate Candidate should withdraw from Race Now (Vanity)
August 19, 2012 | pistolpackinpapa

Congressman Todd Aikin, the GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from Missouri should withdraw from the Missouri Senate Race immediately over his stupid statement he made today re: "legitimate rape". To not do so, will assure six more years for Claire McKaskill in the U.S. Senate. What he said, in essence, when asked about abortion, was that a "legitimate rape" rarely causes pregnancy. Now, that comment is going viral over the internet.

I witnessed, first-hand, in 1990 how a "rape gaffe" by GOP candidate for Governor of Texas, Clayton Williams, who had a wide lead in the polls at the time, caused him to lose the Governor's Office to Ann Richards; in GOP-Red Texas.

Many of us Conservatives understand what he was saying and are in agreement. But, it was a stupid thing to say. For the sake of this Election and control of the U.S. Senate, Aikin should withdraw immediately or "Turn out the lights; the party's over.

Even those of us who are Pro-Life

Those who are Pro-Life don't react to statements like Akin's as you have. Save your histrionics, unless you want to help the DU. In that case, please continue.

You are whistling past the grave yard Unk. I know you are not as naive as you come across. And I also know that, in your heart of hearts, you know this guy has shot himself in the foot and in so doing has killed our chances of defeating the McKaskill witch. Get you head out of the sand (or wherever you have your head) and face reality. And, pray that next time the good people of Missouri will listen to Sarah Palin and choose the person she endorses for the GOP candidate.

Talk about head in the sand??? The primary election is over. Steelman lost. Sarah Palin's candidate lost. The same Sarah Palin that endorsed McLame in Arizona. Get over it.

Todd Akin is the party candidate. If you don't want him to lose then send his campaign a donation with note advising him to be more careful about misspeaking.

Oh, surely he has learned that lesson already. If not, he’s more of a buffoon than I thought. I pretty well exhausted my political allotment for the Summer supporting Ted Cruz in the Texas GOP Senate Primary. I didn’t have that much to donate, but I gave a small donation 3 times.

Don’t think you can intimidate me by invoking Jim Robinson’s name. It wouldn’t be the fist time I found myself in disagreement with him and it won’t be the last. I respect the man because he doesn’t demand obedience.

I’m still saying you’re a troll.

So Aikin should drop out and let McKaskill run unopposed?

LOL........ This must be a sad day for you. It’s amazing how many people who excoriated those of us who said “Let’s get Obama out of the White House and elect a Conservative Senate and House to keep Romney in check...” are sucking up big time on that thread; admitting that they were going to vote for Romney all along. ROFLMAO!!!

Funny little double standard they've got there isn't it? Apparently they want McKaskill to win. LOL

Come on; are you that politically ignorant or just friggin’ stupid? If you would not post questions like that in your “comments”, people wouldn’t know just how ignorant you really are.

So, now that the primary election has passed, what’s the process for the Missouri Republican Party to replace the winner of the primary as the nominee?

Until you answer that question, you’re the one who’s “friggin’ stupid”, still believing in “Hope and Change”.

By the way, it’s “Akin”, not “Aikin” and “McCaskill”, not “McKaskill”.

You’re right on the spellings; I’m incorrect. My bad. As to what to do now: That depends on what is in the party rules for the State of Missouri GOP. Every State Party has provisions in the event of the death or withdrawal of a candidate before the General Election. Usually the State Committee chooses a replacement.

Don’t count on that; when Bob Toricelli dropped out of the NJ Senate campaign in 2002, the process to replace him with Frank Lautenberg was “extort a rule change out of the NJ Supreme Court”.

An equivalent option is not necessarily available to the MO GOP.

To: DuncanWaring; All
I just called the Missouri GOP Headquarters again. I could tell that the lady I spoke with was in agreement with me that Akin needs to go but she could not say that. She said they DO have Party Statutes that handle how to replace a candidate should they withdraw from a race but the candidate has to make that decision; the State Party cannot remove him. Now, I'm calling Akin's campaign and tell them the buffoon needs to go for the good of the country.

If you’d done that at the beginning, you could have saved everyone a lot of unpleasantness.

Here’s another perspective on the other side of the issue:

I’m reminded of those who screamed for Pete Hoekstra to withdraw over the “Asian ad”. He wasn’t my guy but it was idiotic to expect him to apologize let alone drop out because of media outrage.

Today he’s the nominee and has a great chance of defeating Stupidcow.

I’m with you. I am in Missouri, and I did NOT vote for Steelman. IMO, Palin was wrong on that one. If Steelman had won the primary, trust me, she would have also stuck her foot in her mouth and everybody would be carping about that, too. Everybody needs to get a freaking grip.

You should watch the video again because you're totally misquoting and mischaracterizing it.

It was a poor scientific comment, which he still claims is backed by “doctors”, that women can’t get pregnant if they are forcibly raped.

He did not say that at all. He said it's not likely, but not impossible. I don't know the scientific facts of it, but I have read online the article from a doctor which he may have been referencing that says the trauma and stress of a rape would make it less likely for a pregnancy to occur.

The worst part is, that is completely clouds the real reason you should not allow abortion in the case of rape. His argument was that we don’t have to allow abortion for rape because in “real rape” the woman doesn’t get pregnant.

But in reality, the reason we shouldn’t allow abortion for rape is that the child isn’t guilty of a crime, and doesn’t deserve to be murdered just because his father was a rapist.

What you just said is EXACTLY what he said in the interview clip. I have no idea what you're complaining about. He said in the rare event that rape results in a pregnancy, the baby should not be punished, the rapist should.

His larger point that these are rare cases is totally valid. Liberals always try to focus on that 5% of problem cases in order to justify changing our entire way of life. That is their basis for Obamacare, their environmental policies, same-sex marriage and just about everything they propose. They use rare cases to try to throw out our policies which are generally remarkably effective and successful for the vast majority of people.

He also said "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” The underlying implication being that pregnant rape victims are liars and not actual victims of rape.

No such thing was implied at all. He only said it was a rare event, not that it was impossible. You sound like you're getting confused by the word "legitimate," which was an ambiguous word choice, but I never took it to mean that he was implying women were lying about being raped. That would be the spin liberals want to put on it though.
