He doesn’t have 48 hours...he needs to be out in 24. This has to happen, and soon, this guy has already had a few gaffe’s and its becoming very clear as to why McCaskill was running ads supporting him in the primary.

Steelman is the solution at this point. Akin needs to step down, this controversy will follow him around and who knows what other gaffe’s this guy might come up. Politicians who make serious errors like this, usually make it a habit.

If he stays, this becomes an anchor around the necks of other GOP candidates who will be asked about rape and pregnancy instead of the economy. If he stays, McCaskill will most likely trounce him. A win is needed and Steelman can accomplish that.

The people here are rightly concerned, first with some idiotic comments by a career politician who should know better and secondly, by the coming media firestorm that will make independent voters look at this guy as the spawn of Satan.

He just single-handedly killed his chances of being elected to the Senate. He needs to step down, let Steelman have a shot, because if he stays, McCaskill just got another 6 years to be an empty suit.

Your logic is lousy.

McCaskill knew this guy was a clown when she funded ads supporting him in the primary. His temporary 11 point lead in the polls will shortly turn to a deficit and the media will never, ever let this go, they will harass this guy with his comments at every chance, not just him, but pretty much every single other male Republican running for office for the rest of this election season.

Gosh -- this guy was elected with super majorities from his district for 12 years and served honorably. He has said these things in his district for 12+ years.

Let me guess: You think that social issues like abortion have no place in electoral platforms.

Just because he won his district doesn’t mean he can carry the entire state. Huge difference. The guy needs to be removed immediately. Another race where the GOP snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. O’Donnell, Angle, etc. Like watching a train wreck.

Sadly, it wasn’t one misspoken word. It was a poor scientific comment, which he still claims is backed by “doctors”, that women can’t get pregnant if they are forcibly raped.

The worst part is, that is completely clouds the real reason you should not allow abortion in the case of rape. His argument was that we don’t have to allow abortion for rape because in “real rape” the woman doesn’t get pregnant.

But in reality, the reason we shouldn’t allow abortion for rape is that the child isn’t guilty of a crime, and doesn’t deserve to be murdered just because his father was a rapist. Until we can make that argument with conviction, we’ll have a real problem passing a law to ban abortion for rape.

That’s because too many people who are “pro-life” seem to be so because they think the women deserve to suffer a pregnancy — hence, they think that if it wasn’t the “womans fault” she should be allowed to abort. But pregnancy is not a punishment, and abortion should be illegal because it kills a human being, regardless of how the woman got pregnant or why.

Webster's 1828:
legitimate

LEGIT'IMATE, a. [L. legitimus, from lex, law.]

1. Lawfully begotten or born; born in wedlock; as legitimate heirs or children.

2. Genuine; real; proceeding from a pure source; not false or spurious; as legitimate arguments or inferences.

I guess Mirriam-Webster and John Grishmam, et al didn't get the OED memo that the 'not spurious' sense is obsolete

Definition of LEGITIMATE

1
a : lawfully begotten; specifically : born in wedlock b : having full filial rights and obligations by birth <a legitimate child>
2
: being exactly as purposed : neither spurious nor false <a legitimate grievance> <a legitimate practitioner>
3
a : accordant with law or with established legal forms and requirements <a legitimate government> b : ruling by or based on the strict principle of hereditary right <a legitimate king>
4
: conforming to recognized principles or accepted rules and standards <a legitimate advertising expenditure> <a legitimate inference>
5
: relating to plays acted by professional actors but not including revues, burlesque, or some forms of musical comedy <the legitimate theater>

Examples of LEGITIMATE

  1. legitimate means for achieving success
  2. the legitimate use of firearms
  3. There's no legitimate reason for prescribing this medication to a child.
  4. Law books were getting thicker by the week with Supreme Court decisions barring legitimate claims because they weren't timely filed. —John Grisham, The Chamber, 1995

Cordially,

But he wins his district handily year after year which is more liberal than the outstate areas. And those outstate areas are more conservative and very prolife.

I think absurd idiocy has no place in electoral platforms. I don’t know how this moron got re-elected in the past, but this is more evidence of the tremendous brain-drain we see in government, on both sides of the aisle.

Paul Ryan comes from a Democrat-heavy District and I guarantee that in 100 years he doesn’t make a comment this spectacularly stupid.

Akin’s statement simply proves once again that common sense really isn’t all that common.

Aikin mispoke. A baby is a baby no matter how it is conceived. Why fuss over Aikin, Romney denies life begins at conception, God created a new human person with a body and a soul, there are no abortion exceptions.

Claire will beat on moral issues.

As one FReeper put it: The damage this guy has done is “incalculable”. I called the Republican Party of MO at 5:30 this morning and left a voice message asking them to please get this guy to step aside and be replaced by Sarah Steelman. The people of Missouri should have listened to Sarah Palin and nominated Steelman in the first place.

Akin never had any single female votes.

Wow. If your polling is that great you should hire out to Romney/Ryan.

The GOP will probably take control of the senate, even if Akins’ continuing gaffs cause them to lose Missouri. But they won’t get to 60 so the Democrats will shut down anything the Romney/Ryan administration may want to pass.

Its kinda funny. With Mitt Romney they scream that he’s our candidate and we have no choice but to support him no matter how bad he is. (And he does say a lot of really stupid crap) But with this guy they can’t wait to throw him overboard.

As far as the social issues, it just proves what I’ve said all along about “moderates”. Nothing but lying manipulative bottom feeding scum who are more likely to vote democrat than conservative anyway. I never miss an opportunity to tell those puddinhearted cowards to be true to themselves and vote democrat and quit trying to infect the GOP.

So what. Missouri Right to Life is using his comments to raise twice as much for the Akin campaign.

Can you give us a link or website to prove that? I’d love to think that’s true but I really find that hard to believe. Even those of us who are Pro-Life know that this has hurt the GOP chances of retaking the Senate and has hurt the GOP nationally.

I based what I said on what I’ve seen in the past in campaigns where there has been a major gaffe like this. Go back and read my post. And, I read early this morning, btw, that the DNC is raising money, nationwide, using Aikin’s comments.
