The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing that 838,000 acres near the U.S.-Mexico border be designated as critical habitat for jaguars. While a small section of the proposed zone is in New Mexico, most of the land is in Southern Arizona, including the area of the proposed Rosemont Mine.
The move was hailed by the environmental group that has long worked for jaguar protection.
"Jaguars once roamed across the United States, from California to Louisiana, but have been virtually extinct here since the 1950s," said Kierán Suckling, executive director of the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity, which sued to push a recovery plan for jaguars.
The agency is set to publish its findings in the Federal Register on Monday, said spokesman Jeff Humphrey, which will trigger a 60-day public comment period.
The proposed critical habitatoutlined in a 126-page documentwill help protect the jaguar, which was declared an endangered species in 1997, from extinction, Humphrey said.
While there have only been "a handful of jaguars seen (in Southern Arizona) in 50 years ... they are elusive cats," Humphrey said. There have been three confirmed jaguar sightings in the last five years, he said.
Jaguar habit extends through Mexico into Central and South America.

In San Diego County, it was some teeny-tiny mouse or something that lived in the desert .. and the environmental whackos had a fit because some people wanted to build apt units out there - and start a small community with hotels, shops, etc.
The ubber-liberal judges in this county kept stuff from being built.
It’s actually all about this “Sustaining” movement. How the Communists, Marxists and Socialists are going to move people back to the cities; all the people who moved out to the suberbs.
Old ladies with liver spots ?
BTTT !
Wait.
Help me, here. Jaguars/black panthers are indigenous to the US of A and other NA countries. Am I correct?
If so, why is this “news?” Indigenous animals have more rights to the “borderlands” than anyone/thing else. So where do I have to go to help the kittehs regain their habitat?
*sheesh*
Illegals have really Effed Up the wildlife. Calling an illegal runner of more illegals will never EVER be a coyote.
Wish I could be a “fly on the wall” of the border...with the latest technology...
Kittyping
The state of Arizona needs a counter proposal that the feds give back all state lands they have taken, excepting military and Indian reservations.
The federal government currently controls 42% of land in the state. That is too damned much, and the federals do not have the constitutional authority for such takings.
Not content to taking huge tracts of land, about 20-30 years ago, the federals decided to cherry pick and take the best spots for tourists to visit as well. Previously free, the feds put up gates and required pay parking, and charge entrance fees.
Not theirs!
Well...my gaydar just pegged to the max!!!!
WoW! Just WoW!
La migra ...more likely.
It’s all part of the U.N.’s Agenda 21 plan. Whenever the anti-capitalists want to lock up more land they find (or maybe even introduce) an “endangered species.” Obama’s Czars and Marxist think tanks have this stuff all mapped out years in advance but they proceed in an incremental way so as not to let the frog know it’s being boiled.
“including the area of the proposed Rosemont Mine.”
Yep, how many jobs and how much wasted money from the private sector? The private sector is doing just fine, what we need are more government worker to enforce Obama’s edicts.
Nice car.
IMHO, 98% of these exotic animal “sightings” are fraudulent. Most of the time, the federal employees were just out in the stick blowing some weed or drinking beer. These “sightings” are necessary for them to keep their jobs.
I’m betting the purpose of this is to prevent an effective barrier from being built on that section of the border, “because it would interfere with the migration of the kitties”...and illegal Democrats.
It was; I sold it privately 11yrs ago, to another collector. I had quite a varied collection, once upon a time.
Like I said...nice car.
Thanks. It was sweet, Lucas Electrics aside. LOL.
